A Color Scheme – Step by Step

My first love when starting to develop a color scheme is a really neutral background.  Remember, neutral doesn’t have to be a shade of white.  My neutral is a shade of beige with a camel undertone, so it looks warm and bright, not dull.  If you are trying to find a color scheme for your room, be true to yourself and stick with your all time favorite colors, just use some of the trendy colors for your accents if they aren’t your favorites.  I really like  a lot of colors, but my all time forever favorites are chocolate, camel, caramel, gold and cream.  I like to add a little burn orange, rust and green to the mix once in a while, but basically just in accessories or accents.

My family room is currently done in my favorite colors and it just makes me happy every time I walk in. The walls are painted a very pale beige with a tiny bit of a camel undertone.  The drapes are camel plaid on the top and camel and cream stripe on the bottom, and the carpet is a neutral beige.  These colors seem happy to me and restful all at the same time.  These are the colors I can live with day in and day out.

Now I do like bright orange as you can see, however in small does in accessories and for seasonal decorating.   See, this still has my same camel, brown and cream.  The burnt orange is just a great accent.

For Christmas this room was easy to change just by adding green and red pillows.

This time the chocolate and green become the accents.  Notice how I add more of these colors with the rest of the accessories.

The aqua that I used in the living room, works beautifully in here for a softer color scheme.

Add one pop of orange in a pillow and it spices things up a bit.  (I would also add some orange in the other accessories too, but this was just to show you some examples.)

I don’t have a lot of navy or blue, but you can see how perfectly this would work too.

Neutral doesn’t have to be white or boring beige, just any soft background that a ton of colors work well with.  I can also see Purple, Cranberry, Black and any number of colors in here.  Start with a neutral background, maybe even a lovely gray, and then use the colors that speak to you, and especially the ones that make you smile every time you walk into the room.
