I have loved following Penny and seeing how she has totally transformed her new home. I love her style and how she has taken a rather bland room and made it warm and inviting with her special touches. I know you are going to love seeing how she Pulled It All Together.
Hi Everyone! My name is Penny and I blog over at the Comforts of Home. I was thrilled when I found out that Marty wanted me to participate in her new series, Pulling It All Together.
Marty is the queen of the vignette. I love to watch her change out her counter tops and table tops. She comes up with some wonderful ideas.
I had to choose a room for Pulling It All Together, and I chose my living room.
We moved into this house a little over a year ago. When we bought the house, the living room looked like this.
It had stained white carpet and greenish beige walls.
Now it looks like this.
So, how did I pull it all together? We removed the old carpet and had hardwood installed. We painted the living room a soft yellow called Belgium Waffle by Olympic Paints. I purchased fabric and made the curtains. A lot of the furniture came from my previous home, like the cheetah print chair, which was purchased at a local furniture store about 4 years ago. You can see it in my old home, here.
When we moved, we down sized to a house half the size of our previous home. So the big sofa had to go, and we purchased two leather chairs in it’s place.
That gave us a grouping of 4 chairs and we can pull other chairs in from the den, if we need to.
Most of the other pieces of furniture and accessories have been purchased over time. Some new, some from antique stores, some from thrift stores. I love the look of a home that wasn’t put together in a day. I am always on the hunt for something special to add to my home. I love Country French style, so when I spotted this French confit pot at an antique store in Blowing Rock, NC, I snatched it up. It is the one in the middle below. The taller one I purchased on Ebay several years ago, an the smaller green one came from another antique store in Asheville, NC.
They are sitting on top of a wine cabinet that we have had for many years.
It sits on the left side of the fireplace. When we bought this house, we originally thought we would build bookcases on either side of the fireplace, but then decided we liked the look of free standing furniture better for this home. In order to balance the other side of the fireplace, we found this old 1940 English cabinet, that we used as a bar/liquor cabinet.
The piece above the painting (by a local artist) is an old piece of copper gutter. We bought that at a salvage place. It adds some height and create balance with the taller wine cabinet on the other side of the fireplace.
The tray on top of the cabinet came from Pier 1 and the decanters from Amazon. The silver lions head ice bucket was picked up at a local antique store. I should probably polish it, but I love the patina on it.
The brass quail, came from an antique store, the concrete urn filled with orchids, came from a near by garden center. The tray on the coffee table was gifted to me by a friend as a house warming present and is made from reclaimed lumber.
We purchased the Swedish style clock several years ago. It was originally black and I recently painted it. You can see more about that here. The wood painted panel above the TV came from a shop at Biltmore Estates, and the wrought iron piece above is an antique pieced purchased at a local antique fair that happens in our town once a year.
I scatter copper, brass and old leather books as well as decorating books around to warm up the room.
