You are in for such a treat today, Ron from Uptown Acorn is going to share two rooms in his fabulous Historical home. I love all the architecture and Ron has such a wonderful way of utilizing all the space in this home and accenting all of the home’s original character. I love the way he mixes heirlooms, coastal and modern to create the most inviting spaces.
Thanks so much to Marty for inviting me into your homes today to share my two favorite spaces in my home. Good Morning, my name is Ron, and I blog at Uptown Acorn. The name of my blog was derived from the name of the part of town I live in good ole New Orleans{Uptown}, and the acorn which is a favorite French symbol of mine which means prosperity.
I have been owner of a hobby-business of mine for over 8 years, The Acorn at Wisteria Hill where I create custom botanicals for the home. I love New Orleans, I love the South, and I love to eat, drink, and be merry. My blog captures the spirit of the South.
For Pulling It All Together, I have chosen two of my very favorite areas in my home to share with you today: the parlor & stair parlor.
When we moved into the home in 2008, I immediately fell in love with the Neoclassical designed feel of the first two rooms. I think it might have been these two rooms that “sold” me on the home. The moldings, the fireplace and screen, and the columns had me at “hello”.
My design style is traditional with Southern Coastal touches. I like to call it “traditional Southern”.
I have many pieces that J & I have collected through the years.
Come and walk through the front door with me…
As you enter the parlor, a mirrored chest topped with my favorite oyster shell mirror welcomes all who enter the home.
The chest drawer is perfect for corralling keys, sunglasses, and mail. On the mirrored chest is a lamp for ambiance, two apothecary vessels (one filled with turtle shells and the other with vintage yard orbs), and a concrete clam shell filled with reindeer moss and shells. I adore the beach, and the oyster shell mirror and seashells bring the spirit of the coast to me daily.
Hats hang on hooks near the door as well as umbrellas are held in a metal rack. Vintage canes and golf club rest in the stand as well.
The sofa was brought to the parlor from our Atlanta home. The wall above the sofa holds 8 vintage crest prints which were picked up from a trip to Amelia Island, FL. I love antler trophies, and I have enjoyed collecting them from ebay and other markets. A magnolia wreath is a left over treasure from Christmas. I like the way it bring some green to the parlor.
I use a Ballard Designs bench as a “coffee table”. It always is a great perch for my favorite design books. A vintage wooden tray holds various collectibles throughout the year.
One of my favorite pieces of furniture, the secretary. J gifted it to me after it was on “my list” a couple years ago for Christmas. It is filled with some of my cherished possessions. The lamp is an antique lamp that J inherited from his Flossie, his grandmother.
The hide and leather accent chair has a definite French spin. J and I hauled back in our trunk from Scott’s Antique Market when we lived in Atlanta. I did not own my Grand Cherokee at the time.
The double mantle in the parlor is striking and original to the 1920’s era home. The mantle houses my collection of English oak biscuit barrels and bowls. I adore the look of the collection.
The two arrangements atop the mantle were designed by me, The Acorn at Wisteria Hill. The dried botanicals have been in the urns since 2005. I cannot part with them.
Two chairs upholstered in houndstooth fabric were ordered through Intaglia, Atlanta.
Since the parlor is used for jovial conversation, I love to surround the furniture with accent tables.
The accent tables are perfect place to rest a cocktail and a great way to add accessories.
I adore these two vintage oils topped with the natural turtle shells.
The crown chandelier was purchased especially for this room. It is by Currey & Co. and is perfect for the parlor as it exemplifies New Orleans.
The parlor leads directly to my stair parlor. This room is mainly a pass through area, but it is a perfect spot for a round table. The round vintage clock table married to a vintage draftsman base was purchased from Antiques & Beyond in Atlanta. I was chosen for this exact spot.
Books and accessories fill the table top. Seasonally, I add an arrangement of Southern blooms. The table is really versatile and always receives compliments.
A framed Audubon blue heron, mirrored carriage lights, and abalone shell mirrors fill the right hand wall.
Two crawfish biological prints fill an area over a chair covered in cane-style fabric. A small lumbar New Orleans toile pillow sits in the chair.
I am so happy to have shared these two rooms with you today. I hope you will take some time to look around my blog today.
Thanks to Marty for allowing me time to share with you today.
