Hi there! I’m so happy to be here today, thank you Marty for inviting me. My name is Sarah Macklem, I am a Professional Home Stylist and Writer from Detroit, Michigan.
As I share a little about myself and my blog I’d like to give you a tour of my home starting at the front door and ending in my favorite “room”…
How To Create A Low Maintenance-High Style Entry
In addition to operating a busy interior design studio and online home decor boutique, I write the DIY flavored interior design blog TheYellowCapeCod.com where I share dramatic room makeovers, daily design inspiration, project tutorials, decorating advice and also provide affordable custom design services.
Creating a Small But Dramatic Powder Room With Paint
I have been blogging for almost 5 and a half years and Marty has been one of my favorite co-bloggers throughout this time. In addition to her inspiring projects and posts on life and home, what I enjoy most about A Stroll Through Life is the connection Marty has with her readers, almost like we are part of her family.
After “knowing” her through her blog for many years, I can say that I would love to have Miss Marty over for coffee. I can imagine that we would have a lot to talk about. Not only do we share a passion for home, but most days her and I can both be found knocking out a DIY project.
Although I am a professional interior designer, I have a strong belief that beautiful design can be achieved through Do-It-Yourself projects. Due to this belief, my design business is unique in that I provide a professional design plan to each of my clients that allows them to implement a professional, custom interior design as their budget and schedule allows.
DIY Painted Tile Fireplace Surround
With the right connections, solid advice and a little confidence, I believe anyone can create a beautiful home filled with personality, character and love. Personal touches are a big part of my designs, bringing the personality of the family into the design of the home is always the goal. In the image above, a simple, affordable DIY project using frames and black card stock is an eye catching, graphic design element. It is also a fun way to show off my four children and bring a personal touch to my fireplace.
My blog was named after my home, The Yellow Cape Cod. I started my blog to document the progress and projects involved in adding character to our builder grade home. DIY projects are found abundantly throughout our house. I’m passionate about sharing these projects along with tutorials from my home (as well as the homes of my clients) on the blog.
Budget Friendly and Family Friendly “Wood” Plank Floors
When we originally purchased our home 10 years ago it was the exterior that captured my heart. I immediately fell in love with the cape cod design featuring stonework, custom moldings and cedar shake siding. Our goal was to bring the same charm and character of the exterior to the builder-bland interior.
Staging the Kitchen for Summer
These photos are from just some of the projects we tackled to achieve this goal. We balance the budget of our home decor and improvements by using a combination of high-impact, high quality designer pieces with consignment shop/thrift store purchases and family heirlooms. We can be found DIY-ing many home projects while leaving some of the more complicated tasks to skilled trade contractors.
Kitchen Makeover From Builder Basic to Semi-custom
Making our home conducive to family life is a big priority in every space. We love to entertain family and friends. I frequently share entertaining ideas on the blog. Creating beautiful tablescapes on a dime is another passion of mine.
Thrift shops, discount home stores and consignment shops are usually the source of my entertaining ware. When we are not having a party, these finds are stored around my home and double as decor.
Kids Art and Thrifting with Kids
Since our cape cod style home is small by design, each room is multifunctional. For example, our dining room is also my home office.
During the week, I use the table as a desk. The buffet (a $12 thrift store find that was given a makeover) houses my office supplies and business files. On the weekends, I slip my laptop into the buffet and we use the table for entertaining.
We also take full advantage of outdoor space during the spring/fall/and summer.
Our Budget Friendly Outdoor Dining Room
The front porch is my favorite “room” in the house. I thought this would be the best place to wrap up our home tour. The rocking chairs are where my husband and I end each day visiting with neighbors and watching our three children play.
Thanks again, Marty for having me today and allowing me to share my home. I would love to invite you to stop by The Yellow Cape Cod to share design inspiration and take a peek at some of my DIY project tutorials, room makeovers, holiday decor and custom room designs.
Happy Decorating!
