When You Don’t Have An Entry

My home is so typical of a lot of smaller builder basics.  You just walk right into the living room.

The only thing that indicates an entry is a small section of tile instead of carpet.  Not very decorative or inviting.   There really isn’t much of a space for decorating.    The living/dining area is all one room.  The china cabinet is on this entry wall across from the dining table.   It is narrow against the wall and doesn’t impede the walkway through the living area to the familyroom/kitchen area of the house.  That’s the only place it would fit since the dining area has a huge window.  This would be the perfect wall for a fabulous console and a wonderful vignette, however, I love the china cabinet, so it won out and occupies this space.

I’ve been trying to come up with a few new ideas for this area under the window —

I absolutely love the classic look of an umbrella stand and boots at the door.  So traditional and old world elegance.  Living in the desert, this would definitely be truly decorative, we rarely use an umbrella, however I do have a fabulous pair of boots that would look wonderful.  I even have a great pair of zebra rain boots.  I may have to think about this idea.

I also thought about using a stack of baskets, that could really be fun and I love the texture.

Or maybe a stack of old suitcases.

I had a plant stand with a fern in front of the window, but everyone felt like they were going to hit it every time they walked in the door, so I replaced it with this little burlwood chest.  It’s low, but still gives a sense of something in the entry.

Maybe I need to figure out something fabulous for the window itself.  Any ideas on how to make this space more interesting?

Do you have a fabulous entry or is yours a non-entry too?
