Install Wide Baseboard Molding Over Existing Narrow Baseboard

Want to upgrade the look of your baseboard moldings without a ton of work?  Here’s how to Install Wide Baseboard Molding over existing Narrow Molding.

When I showed you guys my inspiration ideas for redoing the hall bathroom, I showed you this new molding idea.  It is a composite wide molding that is sculpted to fit right over your narrow molding without having to remove it.  You all asked for a review when I got it.

Well, I have to say this is totally amazing stuff.  I ordered it from Lowe’s and it came in today.  One fast cut to get the right length and it was done.  How easy is that.

Here is a picture to show you how it fits over my baseboard.  My existing baseboard is really narrow, not anywhere near as wide as the sample the manufacturer shows.  It does fit right over the top beautifully.

I ordered one 8ft. piece for this project.  You can see here how the back of the molding is carved out to fit right over my existing molding.

This shows how it fits next to the door frame molding without any special angle cuts.  I think this is a genius product.

1. All I had to do was measure the length, make one cut, unscrew the door stop, push in place and nail with my electric nail gun.

What an amazing upgrade. Wide baseboard moldings are not normally found in Builder Grade homes.  Adding them to our home as we makeover each room is on our to-do list.  It looks fabulous. (That’s the chair rail and new towel bars in the tub – it’s a construction zone here)

Now all I have to do is install the chair rail and caulk both then the wall will be ready for paint.

Here is the information from Lowe’s web site. and the link to order some for yourself if you want.  I will definitely be ordering more.

We also got the chair rail up.  Now when the liquid nails dries, I will caulk and then we will be ready to paint.  Can’t wait.  This room didn’t get painted for the last makeover, so it really needs it.

(Did you notice how high the builder put the towel bar.  That is going to be lowered for sure when I install the new one.)

Thanks for sharing your ideas. I had wood floors put in and the installer did not remove the old baseboards. So now that I want to upgrade there is too much space. Hope this can work for my problem. Thanks again and you projects came out beautifully.

First I would like to say I love the name of your blog. It has such a comforting ring to it.
Second I would like to say that we have the same flooring and paint color on the walls 🙂

I’ve searched the web for hours and as far as I can tell, the RapidFit baseboards are no longer being sold. The RapidFit website no longer exists. I am bereft! 😭

You can find it at Lowes or Home Depot.

I think just adding a small base molding to your existing baseboard would solve your problem. I have a place at the bottom of my posts that says “Subscribe”. Just hit that button and fill in your email address and all of my posts will come directly into your mail box. Thanks, Marty
