How To Style Coffee Tables – Tips & Ideas

Putting the house back together after Christmas is both fun and challenging.  I want things to look good, but not repeat the same old things all the time.

I also find that I get in a rut and use the same accessories over and over again.  I have a lot of stuff in my stash, so I need to use it or purge it.

I went through my archives to find a few different arrangements I have used for my coffee tables.  It’s nice to refresh my memory and see how a few of my accessories work in different ways.

My coffee table in the family room is square, and that can be a problem.  I always feel like all 4 squares of the table need to have something on it.  I love this table, it has 4 stools that store underneath and are fabulous when an extra seat is required, plus the rush tops of the stools are so pretty to see through the glass.

However with all this going on, putting something on top of the table can be a challenge.

I love using trays to create a story.  This also gives me the opportunity to add some shine or color to the table in a subtle way.  Trays are a great way to make a few diverse pieces look cohesive.

Plants add life to any decor.  I love to use books too and these add some color interest.  Globes, statues and boxes are also interesting on tables.

This is another use of a plant to give the table some life.  Ivy’s in small pots work great in so many places.  Stack some fun accessories on top of books too for added interest and detail.

Let’s break this one down piece by piece.

I love this leopard tray, it adds pattern and character to the vignette.  I wanted this to be an earthy,  rustic, outdoorsy, nature look.

The turtle shell and the horn magnifying glass handle contribute to that look.

Tie it together with the horse statue, ivy and earthy candles and it fits in with the decor on the sofa.    You can group just about anything together to create a theme if you repeat the feel of a few of your items.

My living room coffee table is a drop leaf oval and is a little more formal, but I use the same ideas in here too.

Books, plants and flowers.  Do several stacks of books and display boxes and flowers on top of them.

Since my table is dark I like to brighten it up with lighter accessories.  A white tray holds plants, books and orbs.  Glass candlesticks add sparkle and elegance to any table.  Brass would look fabulous in this arrangement too.

Whether you go simple or elaborate, rustic or elegant, it is always so fun to let your personality shine with your accessories.  I think this is what makes your home “you”.
