Maximum Storage In A Small Linen Closet

I have your typical “builder basic” house, but my linen closet is not even “basic”. The builder must think that no one has any sheets, blankets or towels except what they are using at the moment.  I have struggled with this tiny closet for years.  It was time to figure out something that worked and end my frustration.  After a ton of purging and a new door shelving unit, I think I have finally created the maximum storage in a small linen closet possible.

This tiny door that is only 17 1/2 inches wide is what I have for a linen closet.

It is barely the width of a folded towel and really not great storage.  One folded blanket takes up a whole shelf, so they have to go somewhere else.  I just need this space for towels, sheets and bathroom essentials and even that is hard to figure out.

While cooking the other day a light bulb moment went off when I was looking at the pantry.  This wire shelving door rack almost doubled my pantry space.  How fabulous it would be to have something similar for the linen closet.

That sent me on a hunt for a small one that would fit on that tiny door.  I finally found one that is only 12″ wide, so that will work.

Out came everything and the purging began.  I am embarrassed to say that I had all of this in that tiny little closet.  I haven’t purged linens in years and it shows.

What a mess – – –

and even more mess.

I narrowed it all down to this – – –

and this.

A big bag to the trash can and these two to Goodwill.

This is what we really use, so this is what I kept.  The top shelf is place mats and table runners.  Next is hand towels, wash cloths and kitchen towels on the left.  Third shelf is bath towels.  Bottom shelf is guest room sheets in the back, pillow cases on the right and an open spot for some new King Sheets.

The door shelves arrived and they are great.  Plenty of room for light bulbs, shampoo, bar soap, Kleenex and paper towels.  We buy huge packs of toilet paper, so it will fit perfectly on the bottom.  (Yes that top shelf of the linen closet is full of alcohol.  We are not big drinkers and every time we have a party, someone brings more, so we have a whole shelf full.  I need to start sending some home with everybody I know. haha)

Oh I do love this.  How nice to be able to see what we have and not have it all stuffed with things we don’t even use.

If you need some extra storage, I would definitely recommend those door units, they are amazing and they take care of tons of small things so the shelves are freed up for larger items.

I got mine from Walmart, but you can find them almost anywhere and on line everywhere. Mine is about 14″ wide. It is one designed to either screw to the door or hang over the door with brackets. Marty
