If you have seen my home, then I am sure you have seen my huge mirror in the living room. I really like the mirror, but realize that in this house it totally overpowers the room and the furniture. This is a really, really big mirror – 4′ x 7′ with a really big antique gold frame. Here is a view from the stairs.
Sort of a straight on view
and another view. Ok, we all get that it is big. It hung over the sofa in two houses ago that had vaulted ceilings and looked fine, however these ceilings are much higher.
Here it was in my last house with 9′ ceilings and between two windows. It didn’t look so big.
NOW THE QUESTION IS THIS – – -Is it the elephant in the room or is it the one quirky thing that makes this room unique? I have loved having this huge mirror because it makes the rooms I’ve had look so much bigger. This current living room is 15′ x 31′ including the dining area. The one thing that makes the living area seem small is the recessed section by the front window. It is only 9′ wide, so that is really small. It confines the living space down to a really small footprint. Several have asked me why I didn’t try the sofa in front of the window and the small space is why. There is no room for end tables on the sides it is such a confined area. NOW THE BIG QUESTION – Is it time for a change, rearrange, hang it lower or turn it vertical. This past week I had several more suggest that I turn it vertical. That has been suggested quite a few times. I couldn’t imagine that personally then I went on pinterest and found several living rooms that had a huge mirror turned vertical behind the sofa.
These were all interesting. If mine stays the way it is, I do think it has to be hung a little lower above the sofa. If we turn it vertical, then how tall do we hang it, or do we put it down by the floor and just have it show about 4′ above the sofa, or somewhere in-between.
Now there is another option – – – Put it behind my console table on the entrance wall. I have a really large painting hanging above this console table, so maybe the mirror could replace it.
It could hang just above the floor molding and the table be placed in front of it. The table would fit right inside the frame space of the mirror since the mirror is wider than the console. Hanging vertical that way it would be about 2inches taller than the current picture.
This is what else is on this wall. The wall is 27′ long from the door to the bottom of the stairs. I could even scoot the china cabinet and chairs down a little. (This picture might even go over the sofa for now – this shows a pretty accurate likeness to the colors in the painting.)
Here are some pictures I found on pinterest that show what that would look like.
Then the next question is do I get rid of it all together? I love the idea of a mirror over the sofa since I already have tons of art, and yes I do agree, there are some fantastic mirrors out there that would look wonderful and some fabulous art too.
Help me out. This thing is so heavy and takes 4 guys to just lift it up, plus it is hung on the wall with bolts in the studs, so moving this is not a walk in the park.
Give me your honest opinion – YES – NO – MAYBE – LEAVE IT or something else.
