It’s Time For Me To Stop Looking Like A Slob – Confession

Ok, this is real confession time and might be too much TMI.  I don’t know about you, but I am ashamed to admit that I get up in the morning, shower, brush my teeth, run a comb through my hair and put on a pair of old leggings and a shirt and start in with my day.  If I have to run a quick errand I have been know to go just like I am.  If I need to go grocery shopping, I will probably put on some lipstick and maybe a better shirt.  Ok, I know, I have really become a slob.  I am clean but boy I sure do look like I am ready to scrub the house from top to bottom all the time –  Dressed in my grubbies.

I really need to change this bad habit.  I worked outside the home for years and I know that it only takes about 30 minutes to shower, do my hair and makeup and pull myself together, so why have I gotten into such a rut.   Time for change so I got busy and put a few outfits together that are easy to put on and comfortable to wear.

This white linen pair of capris can be matched with any tee shirt I have to create a nice looking outfit.  This will be a staple for sure to grocery shop, run errands, have lunch with hubby or just go thrifting.  I have several other pair of capris that I can add tee shirts to for even more outfits that are much better than grubbies.

This is a cute pair of capri pants that looks really cute with this yellow check shirt.  I can tuck it in or leave it hanging out and tie the front.  The sandals finish off the outfit.  After my shower and makeup, this is the type of outfit I am trying to keep put together as my all day basic look.  Good enough to even run an errand in.

Then I looked through my wardrobe and put together a couple more outfits that would be easy to grab and go.

Now I need to make sure that I have a few outfits put together for lunch with the girls, casual date night, the movies or dinner with friends.  All of these will work for that.  A nice pair of black leggings, or black slacks and either cute sandals or heels that are appropriate for the occasion.

Super cute detail on the sleeves on this one.

Red is always fun and this top is really flattering.  It can go casual or dressed up a little with some fabulous earrings.

This top is always a favorite.  I love the touch of gold and silver.  Perfect with some glitzy sandals when I want to look a little special – or it can just be a fun top for lunch.

Now as you all know from my Master Bathroom Reveal,

I have purged my makeup, so I have more than enough to create a simple everyday look or glitz things up a bit.

No more getting up and putting on grubbies.  I am going to make a habit of a quick cup of coffee, then the shower, get dressed in something decent and put on makeup.   My slob days are over.

Sometimes I just need to look in the mirror and face reality.  Grubbies are not a good look unless you are doing spring cleaning, or refinishing furniture.

You look great, Marty, and those are all smart looks. My problem is we typically walk each day, so I dress for that first. I try to make it an outfit (bermudas or capris with a tee or linen shirt) that all I have to do is switch shoes (from athletic to sandals), but it’s so darn cold in restaurants and grocery stores, that I most often just keep the athletic shoes on all day. My mother dressed to the nines up until her death in 2007, even if all she did was drive to the post office to pick up mail. She probably rolls in her grave when she sees her 7 daughters at times, lol.

I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s easy to look like I’m always ready to clean the garage. Ridiculous! I’m going to take a leaf out of your book and do the same!! xoxo

My mother-in-law was completely dressed & cosmetics for breakfast. Some time one of her brothers would drop by for coffee on the work to his work. Or, some of her lady friends would drop by for “Cream in my Coffee” time. She was always prepared
with the red lipstick & nail polish. I do try to have my hair combed and a fresh morning duster on….you never know who will
    ring the door bell.

You have another convert here. So easy to fall in the rut of not taking time to be neat. I was wondering, if you could do a make up tutorial, I love your look. I don’t know where to begin, after being sick I got away from doing make up and I want to start again but I sure could use some tips.

I understand what you’re saying, but is there really a problem with just being natural and you? I fall into the same trap of thinking I’m not good enough to be in public if I’m not made up and dressed to a certain level. But we should be thinking what this really says to young girls and ourselves.
As we are naturally should be good enough. Everything else-just icing on the cake.
We don’t tell our daughters and granddaughters that they need to wear makeup and certain clothes to be able to be beautiful. Why do we do that to ourselves?

Oh I agree, being natural is always good enough. But wearing really scrubby – grubbies even if they are clean is not how I want my daughters or grand daughters to go out in public. Simple clean, not torn or worn out pants and a shirt is all I am striving for. A fresh washed face is always perfect, so no makeup is necessary unless you wish to add a tiny bit of lip gloss. I want my daughters to have pride in themselves and feel good about themselves no matter what they are wearing.

If I know I’m not going out, NO WAY am I putting on makeup! Did that every day for 50 years. Just NO! If someone stops by unexpected or uninvited, they get what they get!!!!

    Marty,
All the outfits you put together are fabulous!
I have found this past Season, that I have hung my wardrobe
into my closets by an “outfit” instead of individual pieces.
    Makes getting dressed a “breeze”
and takes the guess work out of my morning. . .even in retirement!
    Love the “selfie”.

You always look so pretty Marty. I love your sweet outfits you have put together to show us. I like my favorite jean rolled cuff capris and usually just try to add a cute top to wear with them each day. Something about the comfy pair of capris. I know how you can get into a rut with clothing choices. I like summer with not having to put on make up with having a tan. Just lipstick and some mascara and I am out the door. Have a great start to the new week.
    Hugs,
    Kris

You’ve always looked great to me! Sharp outfits you have put together and I love your organization. I have over the years relaxed my style. Living out in the country and having chickens, ducks, gardening hard, are all things that make me look like dirty sally. I need to gather some quick to wear better looking outfits for trips to town etc. You’ve given me the inspiration to do so.

I hear you ! But some days I don’t want to go out and enjoy slumming and gardening.

I do too, and then I love my grubbies.

  12. July 28, 2019 / 9:30 pm

I agree with you totally. I have fallen into the rut of just wearing my “grubbies” every day all day long. I don’t like that. Once in awhile it is ok, but I have made a personal commitment to take more pride in myself and how I look. I sometimes think we have become too casual as a society. Casual is good, it is that we have gone to the extreme. I remember when my mother and my grandmothers looked “put together” every day. I want to be “put together” all the time too. You have motivated me to make a change. Thanks Marty. You set a good example.

My mother always told me that one should dress well then you behave well. I think that one of the problems in our society is the loss of manners, respect and consideration for others. This laxness starts with how all of us dress.

Marty, you’re adorable, you would never look like a slob! I know from experience it’s important for me to get dressed everyday, do my hair and wear makeup. it just makes ME feel better. I love your outfit choices, it’s really not hard to look presentable. Stretch skinny jeans or yoga pants and a nice Tshirt work for me. Gotta have my slipon Skechers. I’ve had so many workmen going in and out recently I have no choice, haha! I guess it’s a personal decision, I just prefer to wear a little makeup.

Your column today reminded me of an Oprah show I saw a few years ago. Her words were, “shlumpadinka.” At the time, I remember thinking that I did not want to see myself as a shlumpadinka! Thank you for the honesty and gentle prodding that I need to take another look at my own habits of dressing

It only takes a few extra minutes for a bit of .makeup & different clothing choices. Most days it is worth it for me because it gives me a mental lift to look my best. Best doesn’t have to mean ” fancy outfits ” & a face full of makeup. Just like I make my bed every morning even though most of the time no one sees it but me, I do the same with my hair & makeup. I guess I am a girly girl at heart. Guilty as charged ! I think
    you look very nice Marty.

You are many wonderful things – but a slob sure isn’t one of them, even on a seriously casual day there is no way.

But I love your polished look, great potential outfits and your pretty new bathroom and dressing space!

    Have a fabulous week, Marty!

I think I wear my grubbies because of the way I was brought up. We wore our school clothes and than changed into old play clothes when we got home. We saved our good clothes for Sunday for church. When I am home and know I am going to clean or work outside, the grubbies come out. If I go to the store or shopping, I try to change into something better. You are right though – it is easy to get lost in that routine unless you try hard the other way. I commend you for this post as most of us need to do that. LOL Always love reading your posts no matter what the subject matter contains.

  19. July 29, 2019 / 1:07 pm

I think we’re all guilty of that on our days off…on weekends you can find me in anything from old leggings with holes (yup they get put in the chores/gardening pile once they wear out) to sweats to heaven knows what. If I have to run errands I make more of an effort, because you can’t go anywhere in my small town without running into someone you know.

Right there with you, Marty! In summer, I put on my bathing suit and I don’t even dry my hair when I get out of the shower. I toss it in a baseball cap since I know it’ll be wet again soon from swimming. It’s a bad habit, because I do have to leave the house and I feel like I never look “done” anymore. A cute sundress over my suit and a simple updo would make all the difference. Thanks for the push! And you always look lovely!

I can’t imagine you being a slob! You always look so put together.
I retired a few years ago and the funny thing (to me) is that I have more outfits for retirement than I did for work! Lots of capris & tops for summer. Comfy (warm) pants for winter with T-shirts & sweaters. (I’m always cold.) I do have a couple pair of capris that I use for working outside or painting.

  24. July 30, 2019 / 10:40 pm

Oh, my, did this strike home! Thank you for the reminder. I’m going to start tomorrow trying to make myself more presentable! You have beautiful clothes, by the way. I hope you have a wonderful week, Marty!

I have fallen into that same routine! I live in the Phoenix area, too, and I get so lazy about fixing myself up to go out in the heat. But, I feel so much better when I make even a little bit of effort before going out. You are inspiring me to do better.

  26. May 20, 2022 / 7:32 am

Marty! You are so darling no matter what you have on! I have started putting more effort into my looks too! I still have many athletic wearing days.., leggings, sweatshirt and sneakers… it’s just too easy to stay in that mode! But I love your ideas.
