One More Long Overdue Makeover

If you have been following me for a while, then you know that every time I share our Master Bedroom with you, I apologize for my jewelry armoire.  All of our furniture is dark wood except for this one piece and it sticks out like a sore thumb in the corner.  Now I really don’t need this jewelry armoire.  I don’t work in the corporate world anymore so I don’t dress up as often as I use to.  I’ve always dressed pretty much with basics, so having some costume jewelry to switch up each outfit was my thing.  Now my thing is jeans, tees or leggings and long shirts.  Not much need for a lot of jewelry.  However, this was a gift my hubby gave me when we were first married 35 years ago, so it is more sentimental than anything else.  Since it is staying, it needed a refresh.  One More Long Overdue Makeover.

BEFORE – This corner is the only place I have to put the armoire, and it really does look out of place.  Maybe a little makeover will make it fit in better.

We have a really large landing at the top of the stairs, so I put down my drop cloth and we carried the piece out to the landing so I could paint it.  I had some gray paint so I thought I could use that as primer.  I lightly sanded the piece and then started painting.  I dislike painting furniture because of all the tiny little areas that you have to use a tiny brush.  This seemed to have tons of those tiny areas.

The gray primer coat is done, wow, that was way more time consuming than I thought it was going to be.

I bought a small sample pot of Iron Ore and started painting it again.   Sitting out here on the landing it really looks dark.  I think I am committed now, so I need to finish this off and see what it looks like.  (The hall lights are making this hard to get a picture, so this one is bad, but you get the idea.)

BEFORE AGAIN – – –

Here it is all finished and in the room.

AFTER – – – Painted Iron Ore and a little distressing on all the edges.

The black is throwing me a little bit, but I am trying to convince myself that it goes with the headboard that I painted black and distressed.

To be honest, I am not sure I like it black, so I may have to paint it again down the road.   I just need to get used to the dark piece in the corner.  So for now I am leaving it alone.  (I agree with you guys on instagram – this is a sentimental and loving piece from my hubby, so it needs to stay)

It fits in well with the room. It will take a while but you will get used to the new color. Hubby’s gift is a treasure.

Maybe you can distress it a little like the headboard. I think the distressing catches your eye and softens the black. It’s a lovely sentimental piece so it has to stay no matter what!

I have one of those also that I don’t use but it was a gift from my husband.
I like yours painted black. Someone once told me every room needs a little black. But we know what we like and what suits us. I think it looks nice in your room.

Love your decorating talent Marty. The black color looks good but I think it’s in the wrong spot. Just doesn’t look right in that corner. It’s a nice piece and would look good in almost any room. Bathroom storage perhaps?

Thanks, yes I agree, it would look good in a bathroom, but both of our bathrooms are really small and galley type, so there isn’t even 6 inches of space to put anything. It has to stay here or leave, so, unfortunately, it has to stay here.

Try imagining some bling knobs and maybe a whisper of dry brushed on gold to bring a bit of light, highlights and airiness to a beautiful piece.

It is a keeper no matter what color you paint it. I like the black and think with that window letting in a lot of light the black works and it works like you mentioned with the headboard. The nice thing about paint is you can change your mind! Looks pretty Marty. Have a great start to the new week.

    Hi Marty,

I am wondering if you should try distressing it more. If you don’t like it after that then repaint after the holidays. So happy you saved this sentimental piece.

    Hope I helped

If you have room beside the bed, take the picture down and try the armoire on that side just to see about the look there. I’m not sure what else you have on that wall by the bed but sometimes trying pcs out in different spots helps.
The black color is fine with me, it just looks stuck in the corner.

A small elegant crystal lamp on the cabinet will light the piece up and give it another purpose as well. Night light. Shadow casting romantic lighting. Prisms from window light in the daytime. Maybe on a dimmer.

Is there room in the closet for it?

Great idea about the lamp. No there isn’t room in the closet, unfortunately. It has too many shelves built-in. So there is no open space. Thanks for the idea about the lamp.

That really does look better in your room in the black. I like the idea of adding a lamp as Anne Mentioned!
