I always look forward to getting back into the swing of projects after Christmas. Starting a new year off on the right foot. A project that I have been wanting to change since we moved in has finally reached the top of the list. Some things have to take a back seat to more urgent needs, so this one has been on hold ever since we moved in. What is it? – – – –
Changing Out The Wood Blinds In The Family Room and Breakfast Area.
This is all one space and I want them to be cohesive. Plus I am really tired of trying to keep these brown blinds dusted. That is an every day chore. (I don’t really dust them everyday, but I should.)
Now one problem is the small windows in the family room. They look out onto a side yard. That is the area that my hubby uses for his gardening supplies and growing tables. Not a pretty view that I want to see all the time. So that will definitely determine what I do for window coverings. The larger window faces west and so does one window in the breakfast area, so I really need some serious light control for part of the day. Now we are beginning to narrow down my options.
The rest of the house has 2-inch wood blinds in white, so I am thinking about just continuing the same thing for both spaces. Super simple, and clean lines. I also think this would continue the space as one white box of a room, which isn’t bad in my mind. So I am going to start the hunt for alternatives and see what I come up with. Any suggestions?
When we moved into our Garden Home, we invested in 3″ large slate cream white Plantation Shutters. We put these in all the west facing front rooms (2 bedrooms, office, kitchen) as well as the dining room which is north facing and the large bank of windows on the then back of our house which gets morning sun. We have not regretted this decision at all as it provides great light and temperature control. They make great insulators. Being that your windows are different heights, this would also unify the look.
Hi Marty!
Your family room is just beautiful. I know this may be frowned upon by some but for my laundry room and kitchen, I went to Walmart and found some two” faux wood blinds and put them up and I’m just very pleased with them. They have quite a few sizes to choose from. Just an idea for you!
Happy New Year, sweet friend,

If you dusted every day in Phoenix you would never get anything else done. I is a never ending issue!!!
We had all wood, white blinds in our former home (22 windows, 1 balcony door). Loved them. I’d go with that.
I know whatever you do will be lovely, Marty.
I have those same wood blinds in my office at work, and they get so dusty it’s ridiculous….even though the windows don’t open!
I would go with all white blinds throughout!
I wonder if white plantation shutters would add architectural interest to flat surfaces be great light control visual add texture interest to the areas and create a
refreshing cozy garden feel. I love ve my shutters on the south side of the house. No curtains. Perfect light control
Easy to dust with a small feather duster.
I agree with the other commenters. I really like my 2” white blinds in my house! And don’t show so much the inevitable dust we get here in Phoenix!
Love honeycomb blinds that go top down/bottom up so the top can give light but block the bottom view if needed. We’ve had them in four homes and love, love them!
Marty, I wonder if your blinds can be spray painted….if not…I would go with top/down, bottom/up blinds….I have them and they are wonderful.
We have 2” faux wood blinds and love them. I follow Rhoda at Southern Hospitality and used Payless Decor. I ordered ours from there 6 years ago and have been very pleased with them. They work great and have not warped.
I have 4”white plantation shutters in the whole house. This is the third house we put them in. I love the look and they are 100% easier to dust than wood blinds, which I started with in this present house. I have them facing in west and it blocks the bright sunshine when needed. I have never regretted getting them! Good luck!
I have white plantation shutters throughout our home. I love the look and they are great for controlling the light and insulate from heat in the Summer and cold in the Winter. I love everything that you have done to your home Marty so I know whatever you choose, it will be great.
Just paint them Marty! This is an easy and inexpensive solution. Paint!
