I love Super Bowl so I am right there in the middle of it all and I love hosting and creating a fabulous menu and day for my family and friends. I am not a big TV buff. Any TV will work for me so long as it isn’t one of those small portable types with a 12″ screen. However, there is something about Super Bowl and Big TV’s that just seem to go together.
We’ve had a small 32″ TV for ages. It was previously in an armoire bookcase unit in our last home. It is a really good TV and the picture is amazing. In this house it has been sitting on a pretty console table in our family room.
They say that prices for TVs are the cheapest at Super Bowl Time. Not sure if that is true, but I do know that there are hundreds of ads for new TVs at this time of year. Hubby had been wanting to get a larger TV and a Smart TV, so he had been saving his pennies for a while. Sure enough, the bug hit him hard this year and he really, really wanted to get a new TV. He researched all the brands and decided that he wanted a Samsung Smart TV in a 50″. Then he scoured all the ads and came up with the best price he could find and bought it. This is not a big room, so the 50″ looks really big to me, not so much to him.
As you can see, it is quite a bit bigger than our old one. Hubby got his “Big TV” and just in time for the Super Bowl too. He will eventually hang it on the wall, but for now, we have it sitting on our console table. The width of the TV is 4″ wider than the table, but it won’t be so noticeable once it is hanging on the wall. In the meantime, as you can see, we had to add a board on top to have something for the TV’s feet to sit on. I am planning on redoing the gallery wall anyway, so that will change too.
I am thinking maybe some kind of wall treatment for this wall. Not sure what I want, but I am considering Board and Batten of some kind. Maybe the whole wall, or maybe just partway up, but I think probably the whole wall. Then the question is color or leave it neutral like it is. You can see how this wall flows back to the living area of the house.
If you don’t remember, here is a view from the kitchen into the family room. I think some kind of feature wall or gallery on the TV wall to balance the two heavier recliners on the opposite wall.
Here are a couple feature walls that really caught my eye. I love this one, but not sure that only going partway up the wall is right for this room. That ceiling is amazing.
I don’t have vaulted ceilings in this room, but I do like this simple treatment. It would make my ceilings look taller too. Our family room has standard 8′ ceilings compared to the living room 2 story ceilings.
Here’s another room with a simple board and batten.
I am really liking this simple style. One of the advantages of this wall is how easy it would be to hide the TV cords behind a batten board.
I also really like the whole wall boxed look.
This room has come together so well, it feels like me. It has taken a while, but now I think we just need to finish a few details and we will call it done. I love the white blinds, they just enhance the wall instead of how the dark brown ones drew your attention. I also love my eclectic mix of furniture.
Now my horse and sofa take center stage.
The recliners on the other side of the room are heavier in scale and darker, so maybe something on the TV wall to help balance things out.
Super Bowl & Big TV’s. Now What?
So what is your opinion? What should I do with the TV wall?
IIMHO you need a larger piece under the tv even if you mount the tv on the wall. The tv is just too large for that small piece even though it is beautiful.
I’m like you, not a big TV buff, and those things have become the bane of my existence. We had the 55 and 60″ screens, and with our downsize, he now wants the 75″ oled (counterintuitive, yes, I agree). Uggh…..all I can see is the mess on the wall and everything around it. My requirement will be that any replacement of our current TVs have a picture screen that looks like artwork when not turned on. Good luck in finding your new design. I’m sure you will.
Bigger cabinet for sure! TV should not be larger than what’s under it regardless if it’s hung in the wall.
The light grey vertical boards example with wider tv base looks like your calm neutral style to me. A softer contrasting pop of color and a bigger base for tv will gently balance the recliners imho. Texture with neutrals is a plus.
ugh…TV’s are such an issue and can be so difficult to design around. I am trying to brainstorm that myself for my house. I can’t wait to see what you do:)
Definitely a bigger width cabinet for under the TV. I like the idea of board and batten or the box wall. It will look amazing once completed.
I love all your inspiration pictures of the board and batten. We did board and batten in our past home and loved it. Gives such a nice treatment to the room. I know whatever you decide it will look amazing. Have a great rest of the week.
Hugs,
Kris
I agree larger cabinet under tv even if tv is mounted in the wall. One thing always leads to another right?
We are considering something with board and batten also. At this point the plan is to bump out a portion of the wall by 3 1/2″. There will be an open space for the tv and all the cords can then drop down to the outlets below. The rest of the bump out will be board and batten. You could do the same for a portion of your wall or even the whole wall. We do plan to paint our portion in a darker color to create some interest in the room and help the tv blend in a little. Google tv walls and you’ll come up with plenty of ideas.
Thanks so much for the tip. Sounds like your wall is going to be wonderful. Marty
I love my big tv, simply because once I take my contacts out I can’t see a thing!! But it’s tough to ‘hide’ it in a room, and in my living room the only option for it was on the wall above the sofa. Someday I’d love to have a piece of art or something that slides across it, but for now, it is what it is….and I can see it!
