Welcome to my 2020 Summer Home Tour part #2 – Family Room. I hope you enjoyed all 30 homes in last week’s 2020 Summer Home Tours. If you missed any you can see them all here.
We’ve been here 3 years now and the family room has been constantly changing.
Transforming our “builder basic” into something that reflects us has been an ongoing process. We are getting there and every day it feels more like home.
I think we finally have a handle on it. You can see some of the changes this room has been through here.
Our family room has been the hardest room for me to figure out. It isn’t a large space and it has a few obstacles to work around.
The back of the house is one long narrow space that includes the family room, kitchen, and breakfast area.
There’s a large walkway between the family room and kitchen to the sliding doors and the back yard.
We love being outdoors on the patio and around the pool, so this is a busy space.
I think we finally have figured this area out and a furniture arrangement that works too.
Our latest changes included hanging the larger TV on the wall and adding a new console table.
I love this piece, it adds tons of storage and some weight to balance the leather recliners on the other side of the room.
Adding greenery to any room seems to bring it to life.
I love the Ficus Tree and Fiddle Fig Leaf that we added to the corner.
My horse painting is the focal point of the room. It is one of my all-time favorite paintings.
I think he sets the tone and feel of the room.
Texture also seems to add interest and life to any space, so I tried to add texture with the pillows on the sofa.
These Boho Macrame pillows have tons of texture with fringe and tassels.
There’s plenty of texture on the coffee table too with the ivy and the really pretty wood bowl.
On the bottom shelf, I am showcasing my granddaughter’s new book. No Such Thing As Normal.
This is a book that shares the wonderful differences in all of us no matter what disabilities or restrictions we may have.
Check out her story with MS and order your copy of this wonderful book.
Each purchase is helping her give more books to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and School Libraries.
Her goal is to help all children learn to appreciate the differences in all of us. You can order your book at No Such Thing As Normal.
I love looking across the kitchen island and seeing all the wonderful sun that fills this space.
We have tons of windows in this house which makes it a happy place for me.
Here’s a view of the kitchen on the other side. I love how these two areas work together.

Marty you have really made this room very attractive and functional. Love the addition of the plants and that console is perfect!
Marty It is beautiful! Enjoy it!
Thanks so much Jeanie, I am really happy with how it has come together. Marty
Your room has come together so nicely!!! I love how the dark pillows accent the dark chairs, and the horse in my opinion is the star of the show. The tall plant in the corner adds life and balance. I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!!!!
Thanks so much Maria. It has taken me forever to get this room done, but now I really do like it. Marty
I like the idea of a vertical gallery on the wall by the kitchen counter that houses the stools. You have the small picture. Wonder how another one or a decorative item would add interest and scale to that vertical architectural element?
Would be pretty to look at from the den. Just a thought. Lovely rooms full of light. Love the plants, too.
Thanks so much for the suggestion. I never thought of that. Marty
The consol table that you chose is just perfect in your family room. This whole area looks finished and homey.
Thanks so much Iris, I really like it, the color and size are so perfect for this room.
