Create A Small But Functional Office Anywhere

Since we are all home and trying to keep up with some kind of normal day to day things, plus some of you homeschooling on top of everything else – a home office of some kind can really take the strain off the kitchen table or island that always seems to be where a makeshift office winds up.  If you give it a little thought, you can Create A Small But Functional Office Anywhere and with furniture items that you might not think of as office furniture.

In the last couple of homes, I didn’t have a space to call my own.  Hubby always had a nice office set up in one of the bedrooms, I just used any space I could find.  In the last house, I used the buffet in the breakfast area as my desk.  It was nice to have a small space where I could leave my computer set up and have a space to call my own.  The buffet had a nice surface to work on and there was a great window to look out.  I could leave everything set up and use it any time I wanted to.  It was nice that it was next to the kitchen and family room, so I was always in the hub of things.  I think this set up proved you can Create A Small But Functional Office Anywhere.  You can see how I took some thrifty items and “blinged” them up to create a functional and pretty desk area here

I love my little home office in our new home – I spend a lot of time there.  That is where I blog, pay bills, browse Pinterest, Instagram, and my favorite blogs.   When we moved into this home 4 years ago, the loft upstairs became my office and my girl/cave. See that open space at the top of the stairs, that is my own special space.

Our new home had a bonus of 3 bedrooms and a loft, so hubby could still have a private office in one of the bedrooms and I could claim the loft as my space.  We had several pieces of furniture that were in our last home that didn’t find a place in this house, so it all kind of gravitated to the loft.  That was just perfect for me since it gave me a sitting room and an office.  The small settee was in our bedroom in the last house and the leather chair was in the living room.  They are perfect here for a small seating area.

When you look in the mirror, you can see that the opposite wall to the settee/chair is a wonderful bookcase entertainment center.  It was in the family room of the last house.

This space if fabulous to hold the TV and all my office supplies.  The bookcases give me a fun place to decorate too.

The office space is small but really efficient for my needs.  The gateleg table was used as an end table in the previous house.  Here it makes a perfect desk.  (You can see my tutorial on how to reupholster your office chair here. )

The small bookcase was in the master closet of the last house and held shoes.  Here it holds pencils, papers, staples, paperclips and all those necessary journals and note pads we all need.  My laptop stores safely in it’s case next to the computer tower.  Everything I could possibly need on a day to day basis is right at my finger tips.

My desk chair is right next to the stair railing so I can look over and see half of the downstairs.  This always makes me feel like I am part of everything that is going on.

I love my office/girl-cave and couldn’t be happier with how it all came together.  How about you, do you have a small space to call your own too, or do you have a “real” office?

What a lovely little space! I can relate. I am now working from home, and with my tiny home, I bought a nice large TV tray, and have it set up in the living room to work at. I like that it’s easy to fold up, and put away if I need to.

On a side note, I like the idea of using a bookshelf to house shoes. I was just thinking about moving a tall bookshelf I have onto the porch to decorate seasonally, but I also need a resolution for our shoes. Would be great to be able to combine the two ideas. Thanks for that!
