How To Edit & Style Your Closet

How To Edit & Style Your Closet.  It seems like any closet can turn into a cluttered and disorganized mess in a hot minute.  You clean it out and it just seemingly turns upside down all by itself.  One of those closets is usually the Master Bedroom Walk-in Closet.  Mine used to be the biggest mess all the time.  Finally, I think I figured out how to solve the problem in my last house.    You can check out my DIY Budget Closet Makeover from my last house here.  I finally figured out that editing it and giving it some style was the answer.  If it is cleaned up and looks pretty, I tend to keep it that way. This is my formula on  How To Edit & Style Your Closet.

We were fortunate to have two closets in the master bedroom of this house.  A nice 7′ sliding door closet and a great walk-in closet.  Of course, I chose the walk-in.

Now that I had this wonderful space, what do I do with it to keep me organized and make it pretty too?  If something is pretty I tend to keep it that way.  When it is messy, I just ignore it and try not to think about it. I need this space to function well and I want it “styled” too.  For me, the answer is to really edit what you have in your closet.  If it doesn’t fit, isn’t in style, donate it.  I don’t care how sentimental those pieces are, don’t have them hanging in the closet taking up space.  If you really want to keep them, fold them up nicely and put them in a storage container on a shelf at the top of the closet.  This is where you store all those seasonal clothes too.  Only keep handy the things you really wear and are in season.

I like to be able to dress completely from my closet.  This includes all my intimate things.  This wonderful drawer unit we found a few years ago at The Container Store is perfect.  (Hubby faced the drawers with white particle board to make them more eye-appealing.)

The second thing I do is keep my clothes organized by style.  Dressy, or dressier clothes in one place and every day or knock-around in another.  That way when I start to get dressed- depending on where I am going, I can see what I have to choose from.  This picture shows my slacks, dresses and coats on this side of the closet.  I like to keep slacks on nice hangers – not folded or hung over a hanger rod.  Jeans can be folded or hung over a hanger rod.

The top shelf is for clothing storage.  The bottom shelf showcases my purse collection. I arranged them to look pretty too.

The center section of this closet has a double rod.  Now I could hang clothes on both rods, however I want a primping station and a place to showcase some of my accessories.  This is an area I chose to make pretty.  My dressy tops and jackets on the bottom rack.  The top holds my hat and some pretty boxes.  In the middle I added a mirror and tacks to hold some evening bags.  This space also shows off some of my bracelets and a little jewelry box that holds my everyday jewelry.

This side of the closet has room for more storage containers and tons of shelves for shoes.  I separated my shoes by category too.  Dressy shoes on one shelf and more casual shoes on another.  Since I am not in the corporate world anymore, I don’t need a ton of shoes, so I have room to store some pretty gift boxes too.

The other side of the shelves holds my sandals and tennis shoes.  These are the everyday shoes I choose from most days. There’s also room to store the bed pillows when I make up the bed.

The bottom rod holds my Jeans, capris and casual denim pants.  It also is where I keep all my denim shirts and casual jackets.  The rod space closest to the door holds all my everyday shirts and blouses. So Dressy on the left and casual on the right.  I don’t have to look through my whole closet to figure out what I want.

If I am going out to lunch with the girls or for any occasion, I like to put together my outfit so I can get out of the shower and dressed without standing there staring at my whole closet.  This is what I picked out to wear to lunch with a friend. If it’s chilly I can add a sweater and I am all set.

I don’t have tons of clothes anymore, I have edited out what really fits and what I really feel comfortable in.  This makes it easy to put together an outfit for any occasion and know that I will look good and feel good wearing that outfit.  Some of you have tons of clothes and shoes, but the principle is the same, only keep out what you are really going to wear for that season and what really fits and is comfortable.  Secondly, everything hanging here is clean, pressed and ready to wear.  That’s really important too.  Think of your closet as a fabulous boutique that you can shop in every day.
