You guys are always such great designers and helpful when I have a problem and can’t seem to figure out what I want to do. You gave me the answers I needed. So – – – – – – Drapes Or No Drapes – I Decided.
Here is what my room looks like for now – – –
If you missed my post asking for your help, the dilemma was whether to add side panels to the large back window and slider or not. The windows on the sofa wall would not have drapes of any kind. I was thinking of some kind of soft semi-sheer linen type drapery panels only for the back wall. (You can check out my post and all the suggestions you guys came up with here.)
Here is the picture of my room at that time and the one I showed you. The room looked a little flat and unfinished, so I needed some help.
I really love the light that comes into this room and don’t need drapes for light control, I was just wanting to give the room a few finishing touches. You guys all had tons of ideas. Several of you suggested that drapes may not be the answer, just a few accessory changes. Adding color to the recliners and a picture on the wall between the windows was suggested by quite a few. I thought before I did drapes of any kind, I would give that a try. Here is what I came up with.
Drapes Or No Drapes – I Decided. The back wall doesn’t look neglected anymore. A throw blanket and pillow, a few accessories on the table, a plant, and a picture really did bring this area to life. I love it. I think for now this does exactly what I wanted. I don’t think we need any drapes.
Looking for art is usually a challenge. I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted, but when I walked into Ross this horse drawing seemed like the most perfect thing I could ever find. $11.99 and I had the perfect piece of art. Such a fabulous find.
Since I moved the Fiddle Fig Leaf plant over to the slider window, I felt like I still needed another plant by the tree. I chose this Dracaena at Lowe’s and I already had the basket, so this corner is filled in nicely again. This might become the roaming plant. I’ve moved it back by the slider again and put the Fiddle Fig Leaf back here. Change is good – right??????
This is a small room and I know it holds a lot of furniture, but I love how it looks and feels now. I think it’s stylish and cozy, exactly what a family room should be. Jim and I loved those gray recliners, so I’m glad they don’t feel out of place or like the elephant in the room anymore. Sometimes you just have to go with comfort and these chair are just that, so comfortable.
So, for now, I am not adding any drapery panels to the back window and slider, I can still do that if I feel like I need it later, but for now, I love the open feel and of course, I love all the light.
What do you think? Do you think I still need the drapes?
Looks fabulous.💙
Marty,
I happen to love drapes, but I also love the sunshine that comes into the room. I’d add drapes later in the year for an added bit of warmth and coziness.
Your house is beautiful and you have done an excellent job of decorating it.
Love your videos .
This looks fabulous!! No drapes are needed or wanted! Love this gorgeous room. It’s been so interesting to see how you’ve approached this over a number of years. BRAVO!!
I love that room just the way it is! A few less drapes to collect dust.
I like it! The new horse art really adds the important touch, I think. It makes the room look more balanced. Some rooms just don’t need drapes.
A window is like a blank canvas it has needs.
I like the changes you made. I’d probably still add side drapes but I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. The only window in my dining room is a 6′ slider. It looks onto a covered porch so light control isn’t really an issue but I like the softness that drapes give the room. The door sits really close to the corner so it’s always been a challenge to find a window covering that is functional and pretty. I’ve never been a fan of grommet-style drapes but when I found a pair in a heavy linen-look at Home Goods, I decided that for the price I should at least try them. They are perfect in this room! They stack nicely on either side so I can use the door without touching the drapes. Thank you for the continued inspiration!
You really cozied up the room. Looks wonderful!
PERFECT!
NO drapes!!!! I was one that thought a picture on that wall would do the trick….AND it really does!!!! You picked out the perfect picture for the spot!!! Now, I think drapes would be too cluttered. This looks finished and just enough!!! Good Job!!!! Enjoy!!!!…..enjoy all that beautiful light you get in there too!!!
Isn’t funny how a simple change can change the look and feel of a room!!!
Those recliners are awesome! Beautiful, and look comfy.
The room looks pretty with all the light coming in and cozy.
I agree the room now looks more balanced. No drapes needed.
Looks perfect! Great design choices.
I was one who suggested a picture on that wall. It really helps to balance the room.
It’s a great room, Marty! I would definitely add custom drapes. I feel it would complete the overall look of the room. It will “finish” the room which is already well-appointed.
I think this room looks amazing. And plant/greenery is almost always the answer.
What do you think of adding a hanging macrame plant hanger with some drapey ivy or somesuch in the corner-
to bring some natural green color, life – and to balance out that awesome ficus on the floor in opposite corner?
All that light just screams to have one more greenery piece and hanging it would solve that feeling of needing something
more in that area. Just a thought. Your room is beautiful as is, Marty. Big hugs.
Love it but drapes finish a room
