Moving Furniture Around – Swapping Sofas

Do you ever get bored with your home and just want a change of some kind.  I do and it is really silly because I love my home and I love most everything the way it is.  When I moved the leather chair from the Master Bedroom to the living room for my 2021 Fall Home Tour, it got me thinking about what else I could move and get a whole new look.  Moving the two chairs changed both the living room and the master bedroom.  So I started Moving Furniture Around – Swapping Sofas.

I’ve had this sofa for over 10 years, it is one I bought second-hand for $100.  It is probably the most comfortable sofa ever since it has down-covered innerspring seat cushions and down-filled back cushions.  I am not a huge fan of the cut velvet however it is beautiful and I know that a lot of you really, really like it.  My taste has gone to a little more transitional style rather than heavy traditional style over these last 10 years, so something with a sold color and sleek lines in a sofa is more me at the moment.

Here is a picture from my 2021 Fall Home Tour.  This sofa style does work for my room and the white is perfect too.  It’s just the cut velvet pattern of the fabric that I am not a fan of.

So why not swap sofas around in the house.  I have one that I love in the family room.  It has simple sleek lines and slim arms.  Perfect for my transitional style taste.  I thought it would look amazing in the living room for a change.  With tile and hardwood floors, it wasn’t hard to push these two around, so I could do it all by myself.  I styled it the same way that I had the cut velvet sofa.

In pictures the change is subtle however in person, the change is dramatic.  It’s not so much the looks as it is the feel of the room.  This shows the sofa a little more head-on – – –

and this shows the sofa from the family room that is a little more contemporary in style.

Are you able to feel a difference?  My family came in and asked me, what’s changed, something is different.

I’m leaving the sofa’s changed for a while, but I did change up the pillow assortment and the throw blanket for the living room a bit.

I like the more subtle camel throw for a change.

Wonder how the family room looks with the change – – Here is the before – – – This was my 2021 Fall Home Tour Part 2.

This is how it looks now with the cut velvet sofa – – –

I thought this sofa would over power the small family room, but I was amazed, it’s not all that bad.

Even when something doesn’t totally change the look of a room, sometimes the feeling of a room totally changes.  At any rate, I had fun Moving Furniture Around – Swapping Sofas.

I like the changes. The tufted back sofa with exposed legs looks great in the LR. You know, Marty, with your beautiful sewing skills I bet you could recover that velvet sofa. Its size is good in that room and you said it’s comfortable. Maybe remove the skirt to make it look a little less formal and cover it in a more casual fabric …

That’s a great idea. I will give that some thought. Marty

The sofa swap looks great. As far as recovering the velvet sofa? Having done upholstery it’s not an easy job even to make slip covers. The suggestion to remove the skirt, if that’s possible, would ‘lighten’ the sofa’s appearance but I suspect that may involve a lot of work. Why not live with it as it is?

Both rooms are really beautiful – I love the color scheme and all of your very tasteful decorating. I wish you were my neighbor so I could get you to work some magic in my front room! I might have to borrow some ideas I see on your blog to pretty up my rooms!

Marty I totally LOVE that wonderful sofa you now have in the Living Room. It looks very “English” traditional to me. Switching it out was genius and gives the LR a whole new vibe.

I love this!!! I’m amazed at the difference. And having the super comfy sofa in the family room is a plus. Would it cost a fortune to recover it? I love it the way it is. I about died, reading that you moved them both yourself! You are such a rock star!!!

Wow Marty! That really is a big change. Looks great! Nice to have it be in your “see first” room and the more comfy one in your den, anyway, right? Good for you. I love changing things. I drive my husband nuts. I don’t sleep well and sometimes he wakes up finding me trying to scootch furniture or having the ladder out and moving things around – too often- in the middle of the night, haha. He said he can NEVER go blind because I change things so often he will break his neck not knowing I changed things again. I assured him that if he loses his sight I will stop. Then I give him a carrot to eat, cuz neither one of those things are gonna happen, haha.

Big hugs. Sorry I have been absent and quiet. Life here when the weather is so rarely perfect- and it has been perfect for almost 2 weeks – is unheard of. One just wants to be outdoors in it till it gets cold and horrible until May again. Loving it! Hugs!

Just an idea. The sofa from the LV with the down cushions probably has a very good frame. So with quality frame and cushions I personally would have it reupholstered. A quality job and good fabric will not be inexpensive but quality never is and you would likely keep that sofa forever. Or if PHX area has upholstery classes sign up. The sofa is probably too large to use in class but the cushions could be done in class and you would learn the other skills to cover the frame. The classes are fun. Look at community or adult education offerings. You would be a fast learner with your other sewing skills as far as correct welting/piping for furniture and using a commercial machine. It is fun.

I think the swapped sofa looks great! It’s a fresh look for each space. I like to swap pillows, table linens, bed linens. It’s a nice lift!

    Hi Marty!

I like the way the tufted sofa echoes the tufted wing chair – I think your swapped out sofas look great!!

I love how you move your furniture around so beautifully as well as all of your art and decor. I with I could do that but city homes tend to have small, boxy rooms and not many alternatives for turning furniture around. That’s when bits and pieces here and there help!

Your home is beautiful, Marty, and I enjoy how you make it fresh each and every time!

I am a fan of the sofa swap too. The cut velvet sofa has a cozy, comfy look to it, and even though you might not pick cut velvet for a family room, I think it looks right at home. The straighter, sleeker lines of the other sofa, give it a bit more formal look, fitting of a living room.
