Guest Bedroom Saga – I Think We Have A Winner.
Ok, this is a tiny 10 x 10 room and shouldn’t be this hard to figure out.
This room previously had a full-size bed, so with a new queen bed, I wanted to give the room an update, so the hunt for new bedding started and this has been more of a challenge than I thought it would be.
I wanted this to be a really inexpensive makeover, so I wanted to keep what I could. The walls are painted white (swiss coffee) like the rest of the house, so that will stay. The headboard was already queen size. The dust ruffle I was using is a queen size, so I really wanted to save a few dollars and keep it. However, it was an off-white that was causing me problems when I looked for quilts. When I bought a white quilt, it was all wrong. You can see that post here.
Then there was the problem of way too much dark furniture and the really dark painting on the wall. Nothing was working.
I found an off-white quilt and shams that worked and swapped out the nightstand with something lighter. This made the space look more airy and open.
The carpet has to stay. It was new when we moved in 5 years ago and it is really nice carpet. It’s what we have in the loft, master bedroom and this little guest room, so I like that it is all uniform. I’m not a fan of area rugs, so I really don’t want one, especially in such a small room.
Since this is a small room, I like the idea of all-white bedding, then I can change out the pillow and blanket colors throughout the year. By adding a throw in the basket on the nightstand and a pillow to the chair, it also lightened up things. The nightstand is gray, so the gray and tan pillows work too.
I think I can use a lot of colors, even purple.
I like this pretty yellow for the room. It looks like summer to me. It even works with the dark painting.
I think the last thing that I really didn’t like was the dark art. My daughter to the rescue. She has amazing taste and had this gorgeous painting that she wasn’t using, so she loaned it to me. It is perfect. It totally made the room. So as for my Guest Bedroom Saga – I Think We Have A Winner.
SHOP THE LOOK:
I think the white bed looks clean and inviting, so that is what really matters. Even though this is a small room, it has a large 6ft closet and is just steps across from the hall bathroom, which makes it great for my guests. The bonus is now I like it.
Picture is awesome….any advice as to where to find it?
My daughter found it at At Home a few years ago. Thanks, I love it too.
I love the new painting.
such a pretty room with the light bedding, and that new print totally “makes” the space lighter and brighter.
Looks beautiful, Marty, and you have easy changes available for each season! Great job, as usual!
The new painting was the answer…..!!!
Perfect!!
Hi Marty, I’ve been following your search….and I also think you have a winner this time. The picture totally makes the room! hugs
Marty you guest bedroom update came out fantastic! I love the yellows and whites on the bed. Really brightened it up. Plus the beautiful wall painting that your daughter loaned to you. Fabulous Job! Have a wonderful week.
It looks wonderful! That painting instead of the dark one really clinched it!
I can’t believe the difference that new picture has made to the room. I suggested that the original picture may have been part of the problem with the ‘look’ you wanted to achieve. Perhaps I was correct! The new picture and the change of night stand together with the bedding you have used, have produced a lovely, up-dated look. Well done, Marty, you achieved your aim in the end.
So pretty and cozy!
What a pretty space – I especially like the new picture which seems to suit the room.
The picture works great with the bedding. I agree that you’ve found a winner! I recently changed the 10×11 bedroom I’d been using as my office back into a guest room. There was already a nice tall chest of drawers in the room as well as bookcases and a small chair. I took out the desk and put in a twin bed. I moved the bookcases to a different wall and put the bed between them. I had to buy the bed but my daughter had a bed frame she wasn’t using so that kept costs down. Finding the right daybed cover was more difficult than I expected! There are a lot of options that I loved but I wanted to keep costs down so that eliminated a lot of the options. It took three tries but I finally choose an all-white set. My room still needs some tweaks before its becomes a “winner” instead of a runner-up but your journey encourages me to keep trying!
Sounds like your bedroom is going to be stunning when you finish. It’s amazing how these small rooms can give us a run for our money.
I wanted to say that I thought the old picture was the issue but I didn’t want to hurt your feelings. The new picture made all the difference and I think it will be more versatile for any future quick changes, you know like pillows and throws 😊
It is definitely a winner!
Did you share where you found the new bedding? I really like the texture.
I just saw the “shop the look” link. What a great buy!
The room is lovely and peaceful and I love the new painting. I really loved the pillows with the tassels on them. They would still look lovely on the bed even if you used just one in the middle.
Great work!!!!
Beautiful – it’s so light and bright now. Your guests will be thrilled to stay in such a lovely space. Nice work!
The new painting is what solved the riddle!
Love the art work! It opens up the room and the yellow is so fresh. Beautiful job!
Wow that picture changed everything
I really like the room, yellow looks great
Good job
Morning Marty,
You certainly do have a winner, that picture was the crowing glory, just love it. They all looked good, but I loved this look the best too. It really looks so inviting and Summery and can take you right into Fall as well…..
Hope this finds you doing well hon.
Love and Blessings to Ya,
Nellie
Yes, yes, yes! The new print made the entire room! I’d love staying there! Everything is lovely. Thank you for sharing it with us on Farmhouse Friday too!
The framed art print made all the difference. Very pretty.
Loving the final look and the painting with it looks great! I have to say though, I am more partial to the purple with the original picture you had there. I just think it looks rich and inviting. Just so happens the purple/plum color happens to be my favorite color, so maybe that’s why. I’m more into dark colors and my bedroom is the dark plum color with white, gold and grey. I’m still working on everything but will be done at some point..lol!
Oh and the quilt is beautiful! I think white bedding is perfect so you can change things up for the different seasons and holidays. I just bought a new duvet insert and cover in white with silver in it. It should be fine for switching up colors even with the silver in it. I think it will be perfect for Xmas. I will do white with purple and add in snowflakes and branches of white with silver glitter should do the trick! Along with a few other things like natural outdoor things, pine cones, acorns, twigs, etc.
Your room sounds like it will be amazing. Marty
