Planting The Spring Garden

Planting The Spring Garden.  I haven’t had a garden since Jim passed away 2 1/2 years ago, but this year I decided I needed to use this amazing small raised bed that he created for us to grow some fabulous veggies.  This space is just big enough for our family to have tons of amazing treats.

Jim could grow anything, he had such a green thumb.  I am determined to grow some great veggies this year.  So I decided to add some nutrients to the garden mix and go buy some plants and seeds.  You can see part of the raised bed that he added on this side of the yard.

This picture shows how he added some trellises so we could grow beans and a few other climbing types of veggies.  Things were starting to grow pretty well in this picture.  This was several years ago, but you see how you can use a small space to grow a multitude of veggies.

This is how my space looks now.  I love that it gets some morning shade and a bit of shade from the tree in the afternoon, this is a huge help.  When the temperature gets really hot later in the summer, I can add some shade cloth across the top of the trellises to add more shade.

I left all the trellises in so we could grow beans and other climbing vegetables.  I bought a large selection of seeds and a couple of starter plants that were available at the garden store.

Two little tomato plants and one romain lettuce, but tons of seeds.  I planted carrots, radishes, lettuce, green onions, onion sets, cantaloupe, and green beans.  In a few weeks, things will start to grow and fill the bed up.  I will have to thin out a few as they grow.

This is what the other side of the yard looks like for spring.

Everything has been pruned and ready for spring and summer.  The pool is getting warm and almost ready to swim in.  The temperature of the water yesterday was 78 degrees.  I like it about 80, I think I am a little wimp.

If you are just starting out, this is a great post to show how you can begin with Easy and Inexpensive Bag Gardening.  Plant right in garden planting mix bags.

It’s going to be a perfect little veggie garden! The rest of the yard looks really pretty also:)

Good plan and moving forward is always good. Consider this if it’s been 2+ years since the shade tree has been pruned/thinned it might just create more shade than the tomatoes and sunlovers need now. And you are correct the soil just sitting for 2+ years has depleted it. Would Jim’s garden friends be interested in taking a look and advising on thinning/pruning some of the largest tree? And keep a journal so you remember next season what worked and didn’t work this your solo growing of vegggies.

Thanks, the tree is really young and was thinned last year, so I only get shade on the garden bed in the morning until about 10:30. Then I get full sun, so I may have to use some shade cloth like Jim did in the hot summer months. Can’t wait to see it all grow. Thanks again, Marty

I think it is absolutely wonderful – and a good sign – you want to bring back the garden. It’s a great way to honor your darling Jim. ♥

And everytime I see that beautiful pool of yours I want to hop on a jet and come visit you.

Marty, we have had WACKY weather herein mid-Ohio: two weeks ago it was in the 70s. On Monday it snowed. And three days later, today it was 82 degrees.
My blooming trees have to be very confused. Sure hope that snow didn’t hurt the budding lilacs – I have three huge lilac bushes – and they are delicate buds and blooms and can’t take weird unexpected snow like that – between two warm fronts. SO SO WEIRD! Anyway, glad it is warm again but seriously, can it just be spring and stay spring a little while???? LOL. But do let me know when you want me to come visit, heh heh. That pool is calling my name!

Good luck on your seeds growing Hope it is perfect for your efforts. Big hugs.

Oh my word, I remember that kind of weather when I lived in the mountains in Oregon. We always had weird snow in June, so crazy. My friend says they have snow right now. Here in Phx it is gorgeous. Days in the 80’s, but the hot 110’s are coming in August, so we have to get ready for that. I would love to have you come visit. We would sit in the pool, drink wine and visit all day. It would be so fun. Hope your weather gets better soon. Lilacs are so gorgeous. Big Hugs, Marty
