The Family Room Sofa Saga Continues + Life Update

The Family Room Sofa Saga Continues.  If you have followed for a while, you know that I have been looking for a new sofa for the family room.

This is my slip-covered sofa that is making do for now.  You can read that post here.

My world keeps evolving, so things keep changing.  As you all know, I had some health problems at the end of last year and had to have three stints put in my heart.  That got my daughter and son up in arms that mom shouldn’t be living alone.  I love my home, feel fine, and can take care of myself, so I’m not ready to move in with anyone or leave my home.  My son was living in his 40ft. RV.  He decided to sell it and move in with Mom.   I enjoy his company and  love the fact that he takes care of all the maintenance around here, so that has turned out to be a blessing.  It is nice to have somebody to cook dinner for and to chat with, he is totally self-sufficient, and he is fun company.

He and my daughter are super good friends and love to hang out together.  (After their brother passed away 2 years ago, these two stick together like glue.) Her husband travels quite often, so during basketball and baseball season, she comes over and watches the games with my son and I.  So nice to have them both here and tons of laughs when they are around.  We’ve also gone to several ball games together.  We are having tons of fun.

Now that means my sofa hunt has taken a new turn.  He is 6′ 4 – 210 lbs and loves to lay on the sofa when he watches TV.  That means I need a sofa long enough for him and I would like one that is leather so the dogs don’t shed all over it.  I found one on Wayfair that is 86″ inside seat width.  That would be perfect.  It is cognac-colored genuine leather and has a tight attached back.  I like an attached back so you don’t have cushions falling all over the place.  Just not sure if adding a cognac-colored sofa is what this room needs.  I definitely don’t need more gray.  I think I was so used to the cream sofa that it faded into the wall.  This isn’t a huge room, so I liked that white disappeared.

This is the one I am thinking about.

What do you think?  Can this work with the two gray recliners?

Give me your opinion.

Not my color choice. I think a lighter tan would look nicer!!

Marti , does not look like the laying down comfortable sofa that you may need.

That camel sofa is gorgeous! I think it will definitely work with your gray chairs. The colors in your horse painting are perfect with it.

One question — with the dogs’ nails scratch the leather? do they stay off the furniture?

Yes, the dogs stay off the furniture. They haven’t scratched the leather recliners.

I have obviously missed the health issues you were going through last year but thankfully stents have improved the lives of many. You must have your old energy back now. I think that sofa would be great in your family room. The color plays nicely with the cowhide rug and the grays in the room. And leather looks better as it ages. Can’t wait to see in it place!

Marty, call the manufacturer and cry. Tell them you need another color. The only thing I don’t like about that sofa is a low back. It is so hard to find a sofa today unless you buy a room full of matching furniture together. It took me three years to find a used sofa (couldn’t find new) because I have short legs and I need a taller straight back. Would your son like his very own big recliner ? LOL

He sits in my husbands recliner that is like mine. One of the grey recliners in the room. He just like to lay down sometimes. He always has. Still part of the kid in him.

My two cents- go into a store with him. Try out sofas – will his legs be comfortable or will your feet dangle off the floor? I’d get a one piece bench cushion if he is going to lay down thus, there’s more support for his back. Ask the store for a senior discount even if there’s a sale going on. Happy shopping!

I usually am not a contemporary person, but I love this for your room! I think the color will play nicely with everything you have in here. I am happy to hear that you are feeling well, and that you have some company. Best to all of you.

That will not be a comfortable sofa for stretching out. The arms will be very uncomfortable. Both my sons are over Six feet. Take your son shopping. Glad that you are doing well and your son moved in.

As for how it looks – you will see they even paired it with a grey wall behind it – so the cools and warms would go together well.

Not sure how much you have on this to spend but i just went to our local RH Outlet and they had the nicest Italian leather sofa in that color.
It was stunning. And so comfy. I had never wanted leather till I sat in that sweet couch. I have been looking too. It’s between RH and West Elm now.
    Gotta make a decision soon.

I have a leather sofa in a similar color, but mine is a little more tannish brown. The one from Wayfair looks a little orangey. We went on a leather sofa hunt a few years ago, and boy was it a journey, but we are thrilled with the one we got and we know it is an heirloom piece. The only thing is you do get what you pay for, and ours cost about $5000. The thing about a sofa though is that you’re going to be living with it for a long time, and you don’t want to have regrets. Here are the things we considered: My husband is 6 feet, 4 inches like your son, and I am tall as well, so we needed deep seating. Our sofa had the option of being ordered with a deep seat, and it was a great decision for us! We wanted a comfortable sofa, but not just stuffed cushions that would feel comfortable for awhile and then sag in the long run. It’s amazing how many sofas are not comfortable! We have dogs and cats, so we wanted leather that wouldn’t scratch easily. We went to a huge furniture store with lots of leather furniture, and sat on every sofa. They had samples of all the types and colors of leather you could get. We brought home the ones we liked, and looked at them next to our other furniture and tested each to see which samples could be easily scratched. Again, it’s amazing how many types of leather can be easily scratched! You definitely have a good idea to get attached back cushions, but I would definitely consider going to see and sit on sofas in person. Also, look closely at reviews of people who have had the sofa for awhile. Good luck!

I love it, Marty! I think the color would work well with your room and your existing furniture. And, much of your soft decor (pillow, throws, etc) are similar. If it’s comfy for your son, I love it! But, you have to love it too!

Marty, I would lean against the gold, but maybe a gold throw that you can return – spread over the whole sofa would give you an idea if you like that much gold in that room. Also, having both a son and husband who also like to lay on the sofa, I think the depth is very very important to comfort when laying down. We have one that is very deep, and you could actually sleep all night there, comfortably, if needed. This sofa looks as if the depth is more for a small in stature person – but then again – photos can be so deceiving. I think having your son try the new sofa out before buying is an excellent idea, even if you can’t try this one out, you could try something out with a similar depth, length, and arm shape and size and then, keep trying bigger ones in the store until you find one he likes, that fits him well and then find something you like with a similar size depth, length, etc. I think it is wonderful that you are having your son live with you and that it will be a great benefit for you both, and the fact that he does maintainence, brings 2 gorgeous dogs, and you have more time with your daughter – super!!! On the dog subject. We go almost exclusively with leather furniture with our “shedder” and the leather is wonderful. Good luck with the sofa hunt! – Patty
