Powder Room Makeover Inspiration

I have been wanting to do something with our powder room for a while.  I love the size and shape however, maybe a little more design would make it look a little more polished.  There’s nothing really wrong other than it’s just a little basic in the design and chic department.  I’ve been searching for Powder Room Makeover Inspiration ideas.

We have textured walls so wallpaper is out and there’s not room to do any kind of furniture, so I think we are down to paint and accessories.  I always love how paint transforms any room, so I think I will do something with paint.  Maybe a painted wallpaper, or just a solid color. I have a few ideas for changing out the accessories too.

Let’s take a look at what we’re working with.   Since the powder room is between the living/dining and kitchen/family rooms, I need to keep in mind the colors and decor style.

You’ve seen this view from the front door, so it will help to visualize where the powder room is.

The powder room is located at the bottom of the stairs.

The kitchen is to the left of the door opening and the family room to the right, so I need to keep this room’s decor in mind also as we redo the powder room.

Now let’s see what it looks like now – – –

(This room is really hard to get a decent picture and with the layout, it is really hard to see the whole room at one time.)  As you can see, with the door open, the toilet is straight ahead.  The sink is in a recessed area to the right.

This is the recessed area for the sink. I like the pedestal sink, it keeps the room looking open and airy.  Since the whole room is painted Swiss Coffee like the rest of the house, this area looks really bland.

The right wall next to the sink is a corner wall.  This creates one more angle in the room.

I like that it’s larger and more open than some powder rooms, but it does have its own challenges when it comes to decor.

I am thinking paint of some kind, and maybe a painted wallpaper design.

There are tons of painted type murals and painted wallpaper designs.  I think this sponge painted wall is fabulous.

I love this brush stroke tutorial.  This looks amazing and something I could do.  I also saw this done in black and it was gorgeous.  I think you could use just about any color.

This is a great pattern too.  It’s one I did in my master closet in the last house.  It looks amazing here in the soft brown tone. This could be a really subtle design in my powder room.

This would be a fun design to create on the back wall.  Not sure if my walls are too textured to get smooth lines.

I like the simplicity of this one.  Just painting one wall a dark gray changed everything.  Great accessories too.

I love the idea of solid black on just one wall.  My toilet is the feature wall, so this could look amazing.  (I would lower the shelves and add art)

Here’s one painted all black.  This looks really dramatic, but I don’t think it fits my house style and decor.  I do love how dramatic it is.

I thought about doing some kind of chair rail or wainscoting, but this room has 5 different wall angels and I think that is way beyond my ability.

Instead of just one wall, I could do the whole room in a painted pattern.

Here is another idea of all-over painted wallpaper design.    Hanging art all over the room is an interesting idea.

One other thought is to leave it white and add a natural wood shelf, some new artwork and new accessories.  It could really look fresh and modern with just those few touches.

I think this will be a great First Project for 2021.  Got any ideas, what do you think you would do to spruce up this space?   Do you like any of these ideas, let me know your favorite.

Hi Marty, I love many of your inspiration ideas….the one I like most for your powder room is the one you’ve done before in your closet. Even the color would look great…..but there is one also that really speaks to me is the one with the brass legged sink….depends if you are feeling bold and really go for it….or go more subdued….which ever design you end up choosing….IT WILL BE PERFECT!!!! JUST LIKE YOU!!!! PEACE AND LOVE TO YOU MARTY!!!!

Go bold with the accent wall and maybe painted wallpaper in the same color. Bold accessories and the wood shelves. If you don’t like it repaint. It’s time to mix it up and have some fun. Good luck.

Lots of good ideas, Marty! I always liked what you did in your closet. With the texture of the walls some techniques might not work. I have every confidence that you will make the powder room look wonderful. Years ago when I worked with an interior designer, she painted a client’s powder a glossy red, including the ceiling. It actually looked nice but I think I probably would have gotten tired of that.

I love all of your ideas. We are adding a bath in our basement and I am interested in ideas. I found a sweet navy and white wall paper on serena and lily that I love.
    Happy New Year to you.

I would definitely do something fun in there! Since it’s a small space, you can experiment a little. Then if you get tired of it in a few years, you can change it again! Can’t wait to see what you do!

So many great ideas. I like the gray with the three-line pattern. I’d love to see how it turns out! Good luck with the project!

I like the solid black on the one wall. If you add shelves, you could change out the decor with the season.

You always come up with the best ideas !! I am not a fan of wallpaper, too confining but you will do well with it. For sure get rid of the mirror over the toilet and add a few shelves to hold extra towels, supplies, and seasonal changes Another towel bar would be helpful too.

I had a friend – since deceased – who has the cutest little powder room…it had a bright print wallpaper in reds, blues, yellows … tiny red sink and toilet…I think it had been a closet they turned into a half bath…opening the door to go in was always a joyful experience, so fun ! Where in the world they found the red sink and toilet is beyond me.

    Hi Marty,
You always come up with great ideas. My favorite is the dark gray feature wall. The shelving and artwork would be nice too.
Have fun! Looking forward to what you come up with.

Love some of the black ideas. I painted the CEILING in my powder room black and it is PHENOMINAL!!! Just love how striking that is. Then you can play with some of the textures / features for your accessories, What ever you do, it will look great. Hope you are doing well.

Wow, some good ideas! Like the paint ideas…may try that in our Powder Room. Yes, pedestal sink really makes the room feel airy. Right now I feel sorry for our Powder Room because NOBODY has come to visit or use it in so long. Hoping for better days ahead for all of us!

Love the black on one wall and shelves lowered with paintings above. Very striking.
Paint is easier to change than wallpaper. Walls that are textured would be a bear to wallpaper and look nice.
I’m sure that whatever you decide will look lovely.
