The Tradition Continues

One of the things my family always enjoys are our Sugar Cookies cut in the shapes they grew up with.

This is the rolling pin and the cookie cutters that I was given at my wedding shower.  I think this was kind of a standard assortment that everyone had at the time.  These are the shapes I always used when my children were small and the same ones my grandchildren have grown up with.

A pony, reindeer, camel, christmas tree, angel and santa for the Christmas season.  They are old and don’t cut really sharp anymore, but I still love them and love using them.

The shapes bake up just fine.

I grew up in a very loving family with very simple and limited means, but my mom always made cookies at Christmas.  No fancy frosting, just sprinkled with sugar, so that is the way I have always made them.  After they cool, the excess sugar shakes off and they are stored in Zip-lock bags until time to serve.

I use the recipe card that I copied from my mom’s recipe.  As you can see, it is well worn.

Sugar Cookies
1 1/3 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
4 cup flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk

Cream sugar and shortening.  Add eggs & beat.  Add dry ingredients & beat alternating with milk.  Roll out on floured board, cut into shapes.  Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 12 minutes at 375 degrees.  Sprinkle with sugar & let cool.  Store in zip lock bags.  These freeze really well too.

I think this is the best recipe ever.  If you don’t have a favorite, you might want to try this one.
