Workroom Makeover Reveal

Hi Folks! I’m Kelly from Talk of the House.  Almost two years ago (which seems like forever in blog years!) Marty invited me over here to share my house with all of you sweet readers.  I must not have been too much trouble as a house guest because she has graciously invited me back again. 🙂 So while we are visiting today I want to share a little before-and-after story with you (but you have to promise not to judge my “before” too harshly…okay?  It’s bad….really bad.)

Here goes…

Once upon a time there was this room in our house that we called the study.  It started out as a room with 3 computers, but over time, it became the junk room…the room where we put things when we could find no other place for them…items for donations or yard sales..things I needed for blogging or redecorating.  Things that just did not fit anywhere else in the house.

Be brave.  Take a look at the disaster.

Besides all the obvious mess everywhere, the carpet had gotten gross. I kept saying, We should do something about the study, but nothing ever got done.  Until one day…the day my husband said, We just need to gut it and start over.  Those words were music to my ears!  I hopped right over to Lowes and picked out some new flooring (and then returned home to get all the junk out of that room. 🙁 ) You see, we had recently finished a room over the garage for my husband’s office, so this room – this junk room – was going to be my workroom all mine.:)

In no time, my husband had that carpet ripped up and the new flooring down.  What a difference!  And then he started on the walls – board and batten on the bottom, beadboard on the top.  Oh, and I also wanted a cabinet for the corner there.  So he built that as well.
 

I was supposed to do the painting of all the new trim work, but unfortunately, I got sick at that time, and he ended up doing all the painting of the walls. Bless his heart!

Because this was going to be my workroom, I put a lot of thought into the organization of it.  I needed the closet space reconfigured, so my husband did a little work in there, and by then, I was able to paint it all bright white.

Originally, this room started out as a room for my husband to use an office, and the furniture was somewhat masculine in design.  It didn’t really fit with the look I wanted for the room, so my super patient husband went to work on that.

He added beadboard and a fresh coat of paint, and viola!  The furniture, the walls, and the floors were all finished.  It was just waiting on….me.

I had ordered chairs for the desks back in December – cute ones – Parsons chairs slipcovered in linen with buttons up the back.  Christmas came.  The delivery got delayed until January, and then February, and finally Joss and Main cancelled my order.  boo hoo.  Projects elsewhere got completed.  We had parties. But that room?  It just sat waiting on me…

For months it waited.

Finally, I decided the wicker chairs from the dining room would work better than the Parsons chairs I had previously ordered.  That gave me the jumpstart I needed.  Don’t we all need that from time to time? I sewed the curtains, framed and hung photographs, accessorized a few areas, and voila!  The workroom is finally finished! 🙂

Here is the desk I use for blogging with its new beadboard front.

And here is the other part of the desk unit.  Beadboard was added to the back of it. All of the hardware had been oil rubbed bronze, but I used Rub ‘n Buff in antique gold to change the look of it.

Jars up on top hold old paint brushes and balls of jute twine.

My mother painted the table that I had previously used for my desk, and I stapled linen fabric to it for a skirt.  It is now a great work table for sewing and paper projects.  The bulletin board above it had been painted black and had a mahogany look frame. (I had used it as a chalkboard.) For the workroom,  I painted the cork the same color as the wall and used Rub ‘n Buff on the frame to give it a lighter look.

 
Here is the corner with the new cabinet.  It is such a great storage piece!  Plus the height is perfect for working there too.

I guess you can tell I love red. 🙂
