Today I am thrilled to have Erin from DIY on the Cheap as my featured guest. She shares a fabulou step by step as to how she pulled her family room together. I love her style and her ability to imagine just how special a room could be. You are going to love how she transformed this room.
Hello, and thank you so much, Marty, for inviting me to share a little bit of my home with you! My name is Erin and I blog at DIY on the Cheap, where I talk about frugal home decorating, crafts, DIY projects, and some random tidbits of my life thrown in too. I am a mom of 2 sweet little boys, with baby number 3 on the way.
My favorite room in our home is one that I recently pulled together: our family room.
We moved into our home earlier this year, so we had a big blank slate to work with, which is fun and overwhelming at the same time. Our family room was quite dated with a red brick fireplace and builder beige walls.
The first thing I did was whitewash the fireplace to brighten up the space. Unfortunately this room is the one space in our house that doesn’t get very good natural light, so it felt very dark and gloomy.
We live our life on a budget (hence my blog name), so I tried my best to pull the room together using things we already had, or finding inexpensive ways to decorate. I styled the shelves using things we already had lying around, plus vintage/thrift store finds, and hand-me-downs from my grandmother. We brought in our outdoor garden chairs for extra seating in front of the fireplace until we can come up with a more comfortable solution, but for now I like the way they look. I painted the walls a light grey-tan color called Edgecomb Gray, and that brightened the space up even more.
Here is the whole room as of right now:
I wanted the space to feel comfortable and casual, but have a touch of elegance at the same time. It’s still a bit of a work in progress, but we’re getting there! I went with a neutral color scheme because I wanted the room to have a calm feeling. I have two wild little boys running around, so I wanted a space that was relaxing and serene despite the chaos going on in our home on a daily basis.
We really love hanging out in this room, and it definitely feels comfortable and cozy. I’m thankful that I was able to pull the room together on a budget, which is always my goal when decorating our home.
I hope you’ll stop by and visit me over at DIY on the Cheap for more of my frugal decorating ideas and DIY projects! Thanks again so much!
