Pulling It All Together-At Home On The Bay

I am so thrilled to have Mary from At Home on the Bay as my guest feature for Pulling It All Together.  This lady has talent most of us havn’t even thought about and I love how easily she mixes styles and incorporates all of her DIY projects.  I love her comment “I adore a room were nothing matches, but everything goes together.”  Isn’t that the most perfect summary of eclectic style.  Sit back and enjoy, you are going to love her home.

Hello everyone! It is so nice to be here. Thank you to Marty for inviting me to join you today.
My name is Mary, and my blog is At Home on the Bay. I’d been blogging about our home on the coast of Maine for the last two years, when life threw us a curve ball. My husband’s job took us out of New England and into the Mid-West, so for the last six months I have been blogging about decorating our new home in Ohio.
My style is vintage eclectic, which can be found in both our homes with our Maine home having a little coastal flair. Budget friendly décor is my middle name, and I love to give new life to thrift store and yard sale finds. I adore a room where nothing matches, but everything goes together. Does that make sense?
Today, I am sharing how I pulled together the most recent room I have finished decorating. It is our Cleveland living room.

When we moved into our new home the walls in the main living area were all painted white. Lucky for me, because white is my favorite background color. I love to use a lot of color, patterns and textures in my décor, so white makes a great backdrop.

We have a TV room in the basement, so I wanted this living room to be a gathering place for talking, entertaining or reading a book.

The first thing I did upon arriving to Cleveland was scour thrift stores, antique stores, Craigslist and (my personal favorite) yard sales. We brought the sofa, coffee table, wing chair and nesting tables with us, but we still needed lighting, a side table, storage, seating and artwork. I was able to find the two mid century chairs at a yard sale for $5 each. I cleaned them up, painted the metal legs and reupholstered the cushions with black Buffalo check. We found the bow front buffet on Craigslist and it is one of my favorite pieces. The campaign table was bought at Habitat. It originally looked like a trunk, but I gave it some paint and a new handle to give it a fresh new look. All the details are here.

Another one of my favorite finds is the prancing deer lamp with its original shade. I bought it at an antique store during a March Madness sale. I upholstered the sofa with velvet Ikea curtains. One of my thrifty tips is to look at pre-made curtains when you need home décor fabric. You can get a lot of yardage for your money from curtains.

I found a lot of the artwork at yard sales and thrift stores. You can find some great pieces, that add character to a room, inexpensively. Another tip is to look for free printables to fill frames until you are ready to make an investment in art  .

My final details in pulling a room together are the pillows and throws. This is were I can’t get enough texture. I am drawn to pillows that have some fun texture to them. I made the one above by sewing doilies onto a plaid wool background. The tutorial can be found here.
