How To Trim & Shape A Ficus Tree

How To Trim & Shape A Ficus Tree.  Our home is blessed with tons of windows and light.  Growing plants is super easy and some plants grow like weeds.  I made a few changes to our family room in 2020.  I took one chair out and added a couple of plants to give the room more character and feel more open.

I loved the twisted trunk on the ficus tree, it was so pretty.  My daughter gave me a cutting off her Fiddle Fig Leaf tree to add to the corner too.  These two plants have grown beyond belief and they add so much life to the room too.  I’ve had to move them around since they’ve grown so big.  The living room has two story ceilings, so they’ve found a new home in there.

The Fiddle Fig Leaf is huge, as you can see here.  It has grown taller than me and the Ficus is at the top of our 9ft window.

I haven’t done anything to the Fiddle Fig Leaf tree, but the Ficus has been given a haircut several times.  This is what it looked like the other day –  getting a little bushy and over grown.  It needed to be trimmed and shaped up.

It was taking over this whole corner and didn’t have a pretty shape.

I got out the pruners and trimmed it up from the bottom a bit to show off more of the pretty twisted trunk, and then cut some of the limbs back to give it a more rounded shape.

To trim back the branches just look for a joint in the limb near where you want to cut or look for a leaf with the stem turning up and cut at that point.  If you cut where a joint is turning down, then the new growth on the tree will grow down and the branches are prettier if they are growing upward.

The top few branches could be trimmed a little, but I’ll leae that for another day.

Now the tree isn’t crowding the lamp or the corner.  It looks like this area can breath.

We have amazing light in this house so everything grows pretty much by itself. I only water once a weeek and just enjoy. Thanks, Marty

It looks so much better, Marty. Hey I recently got some Fiddle Leaf plant food on Amazon and it’s making SUCH a big difference to the health and growth of my fiddle leaf plant. I was getting very worried about it. Not so much now!
