Painted Headboard

When I saw my headboard in the warehouse, I was hoping the wood was a little darker, however it really wasn’t.Sometimes in a darker warehouse and with really high flourescent lights, it is hard t tell just exactly what the color of something is. It was a kind of weird cherry color and I really like a dark walnut color, so it definitely needed to be painted.

Since it is around l03 degrees today, painting outside is totally out of the question.  I set up a paint station in the guest bedroom.  Just a drop cloth and a coffee can to hold the headboard up.  Works for me.  This is after one coat of black flat.  I am using Valspar Signature with primer.

I chose flat so I could distress a little bit and then polish with finishing wax for just a touch of sheen.  Even without the distressing, I like the black better.  I think this is going to be perfect, or at least I hope.

This shows some really mild distresssing.  I may have to do a little more, but baby steps.

After I did the distressing, I took a small rag and covered everything with Minwax Walnut Stain so it shows off the distressing better.  I still think I may do a little more.  After the stain dries we will see.  The final step will be to go over the entire piece with fine steel wool again and then give it a coat of Finishing Wax.

Now that the stain is dry, you really can’t hardly see any of the distressing, it definitely needs a little more.

I think this is perfect.  Still not a ton, but it looks amazing.  Now I just need to get it up.

Ok, when this first new piece of the  room is up, I will feel like we are really going to start to see a new room come together.  Don’t you love seeing things freshened up a bit and brought into the next century.  Seems like this room hasn’t been updated in years.  Can’t wait to find all the new pieces.  Thanks for all of your help and suggestions for the room.  I have decided not to paint the antique washstands, I am going to buy some new furniture pieces.  Can’t wait to start looking. Time for a whole new room.  Fun, fun, fun!!!!
