I have been saying for years that I need to buy new chairs for hubby and I. We both love a recliner even if they aren’t necessarily the most beautiful chairs in all the world, we think they are the most comfortable. At this stage of life I am all for comfort. We’ve had these two recliners for years, but What Are The Odds Two Chairs Break At Once.
Here are the chairs. I know they don’t look the best, but they are so comfortable and they’ve got history. I also don’t believe in replacing something that is an investment piece just to replace it. If I can make it work, I tend to keep it. So goes the story of these two recliners. They are both over 20 years old. Both are good quality from La Z Boy and that leather one is real leather and cost me $1000 when new. (That was definitely an investment 20 years ago.)
This is the one I use. It has been cleaned so many times and has tons of stains that just won’t come out. I lived with that until the other night and a spring broke and now you can’t recline the chair at all and the seat is a little crooked. No way to repair it, so time to say goodbye.
This is the one hubby has used for years. His favorite chair. The leather is worn so badly on the arms that I found a similar color in vinyl and made arm covers a few years ago. Just the week before my chair broke a spring, this chair sheered off a bolt in the reclining mechanism. Hubby repaired it but it doesn’t work as smoothly anymore. Time for this one to go too.
Ok, more than time to be replaced, but with what. I don’t know if I want to get matching chairs or two different ones. Hubby said he might like fabric instead of leather this time. He won’t be coming in with dirty work clothes anymore so that could work.
This is the entire room right now. This view shows the two new wicker barrel chairs I just added to the room. They were a great yard sale find that added some character and cohesiveness to the room.
For now I brought in an ottoman to prop my feet up. This will do while we shop for new chairs. I don’t want to rush out and just buy anything, so I am going to give this some thought. I guess a little shopping is in order to see what is available and what hits us as the next best chair.
One thing is for sure, we aren’t buying bug puffy recliners. I want something more slim-line and modern. We’ll see what I can find.
Any suggestions?
A friend just bought matching oversized tub chairs that recline. Not bulky looking but very comfortable in reclined position. She was able purchase in her choice of fabric. Enjoy the hunt.
Hi Marty,
Recliners are always the hardest things to find. They are starting to make them look less bulky and more into the decor of today. Good luck with the hunt.

I’m in the same boat! I want 2 high leg leather recliners that don’t cost a fortune. I’ll be watching to see what you find. Good luck to you because so far I haven’t had any!!
Marty,
A true “bummer” to have two broken chairs at the same time!
However, looking on the “brighter” side, it will make shopping a breeze!
You won’t have to go through, the “will this work with this” stage!
I’ll be watching to see what arrives at A Stroll Thru Life in the near future!
Happy Hunting!
Pat
HI Marty,
What are the odds, then again it might be divine intervention and your chance to get 2 matching new chairs! Enjoy the search!
There will be a few Labor Days sales coming up if you can wait a few weeks! laura from CO
Love two recliners….have always had two matching since we first bought furniture ( instead of using hand me downs) in 1981. First were not good quality…did not last. Then moved and bought two Lane recliners – they were great fabric recliners and lasted for about 16 years before showing wear. Wanted leather and purchased Norwalk recliners….loved the leather, the look soon became dated, and t mechanism did not hold up. After 10 years we moved to an apartment….purchased LaZBoy Pinnacle recliners…two matching in a merlot colored leather. LOVE THEM ! Not too big, no puffy, kind of streamlined, and hold up great for the last two years. Anticipate many good years using them. I love that they match…and purchased a LaZBoy sofa to go with them – Kennedy. Paired these pieces with a navy blue club chair and ottoman that we have had for 30 years…throw pillows tie the whole room together. Oh, – also did the memory foam in the new chairs….BLISS ! Good luck in finding the right chairs for you and your home !
I love those his and hers chairs! I hope you find something with just as much personality that you will love!
My husband has two Lazy Boy recliners. One in the Library and one in the Family Room. He has had one of them almost 20 years. He has had them repaired by Lazy Boy. They are very helpful to come pick them up, repair and them deliver them.
But hey! I’m always up for new ones.😀
We love the Lazyboy rocker recliners. Great for sinking into and for rocking grandchildren. I don’t care how old we look. The old recliner was repaired with duct tape and sent to the man cave.
I will be keeping an eye to see what you get! I am also looking for a recliner. I can find some pretty ones that do not cost TOO much but the reviews are not that great. The ones that have great reviews are huge or really expensive!
Oh goodness, just when you got the other side of the room situated!
My husband had a recliner much like your husband’s. When we downsized, we invested in two Stressless Norwegian recliners (Sunrise model, they come in sizes S, M, L) with footrests. We love them!
We bought our recliners last year from Lazy Boy. They aren’t the most beautiful but they are comfortable. They are smaller in scale than most but they still are bigger and a tad ugly. I just slipcovered mine a few weeks ago. I like it a lot better since it’s white. Just FYI. If they are electric the cords show. I wish I’d gotten manual. . Lazy Boy had nothing in a light neutral in stock. It was going to take weeks to come in. I was in chronic pain so I couldn’t wait for 6 plus weeks for custom. Good luck with your search. 20 years is a good investment in my opinion.
Marty – to avoid those jigundous ugly recliners, husband got Stressless Ekornes chair (Norway). They are seriously comfortable, but a large investment! He has gone thru two so far and we are looking for another. Not because of chair quality but because he is tough on a leather chair. Mechanisms are simple and actually never wear out – he just wears out the leather. Anyhow, they are great chairs. There are knockoffs out there too. American Leather. I believe you have American Furniture in your area (Chandler, Gilbert and Glendale) and they are having a serious seating sale that ends 8/18 (Sunday). You might look at that too. When you go to their recliner section you can sort on “pedestal recliners” and you will find chairs similar to the Ekornes. Good luck and will be interested in what you find!!
I love the motorized recliners. You can pick a nice spot for viewing tv or recline all the way back. The Stressless by Ekorness as Rita pointed out is a really nice line.
Keep us updated on your search. I’m anxious to hear what you think about the different brands of recliners. I’m also looking for two!
We bought the hubby a LazBoy recliner a year ago (after years of wooden rockers) and he loves it! Upholstery with wooden arms, more trim looking than the big puffy ones! So happy with La-Z-Boy we went back and bought a sofa, love seat, coffee table, 2 end tables and a floor lamp! Industrial style tables and lamp.
Haha! Marty…this sounds like something that would happen in my household. So sorry this happened. On the bright side, now you can finally justify something new. Good luck with your furniture hunt.
There’s much more variety now than 20 years ago. I know you’ll find just the right thing. When we bought matching recliners, we decided to switch chairs at the first of the month. I’m pretty sure hubby is harder on his than I am with mine, so this way they’ll wear the same.
Good luck with your search. We remodeled our Great Room last summer and purchased all new upholstered pieces. I was able to find three ( a single and a match pair) recliners and with custom fabric, they look great. The pair, which also rock and swivel don’t look like recliners at all! I know whatever you get will be lovely in your space.
