I shared in this post how much I really, really dislike my dark wood blinds in the family room. I need new window coverings and Santa gave me a gift certificate to get the job done, so I am finally getting the ball rolling. New Window Coverings for family room are happening.
I’M SURE YOU REMEMBER THE BEFORE:
Here is what came with the house and I have been working with – even though they are not my favorite. The family room seems choppy with these blinds breaking up all the wall space. Plus this is not a big room, so I need for the windows to blend in, not stand out. The wood blinds also always made the room take on a yellow tint. It’s not yellow at all. It’s painted Swiss Coffee like the rest of the house.
Major change don’t you agree. This looks so much nicer and the room feels so much bigger. The dark wood blinds just seemed to draw all the attention. Now I am thrilled with my new blinds.
I looked at all kinds of options and decided that what I wanted was really simple. The rest of the house has 2 1/2 White Wood Blinds, so I am going for the same in these two areas. I love how they look in the rest of the house and I think they will give me the blank slate that I am looking for.
As you can see, there are not good views out either side of these two rooms. The family rooms two small windows look out onto the side yard where my hubby has his growing tables for the garden, not a view I want to look at. Garden tools, black pots, shelving with more pots and plant tables wrapped with frost cloth for the cold weather are not really pretty views. As you can see, I picked the best side that didn’t show all the shelves with all the pots and tools. The fence and neighbors house are 16 feet away, but I still don’t want to see them.
One blind up and what a difference already.
This is such a major difference in this room. It might not look like it in pictures, but in person, it is sooooooooooooooo different.
The breakfast area had the same problem. Two really large wood blinds in there too. This area doesn’t need the blinds to be the main feature in this room. Since the family room, kitchen and breakfast area all one space across the back of the house, I want the window coverings to match.
Things always look really messy with any job. The kitchen looks like a disaster and we only have one blind down. Hubby had to go do a lecture so this is how things were left.
The breakfast room has one window that looks out to the side yard fence and the neighbor’s patio roof. That’s not the best view either. ( I am not at all sure why we have windows that face the side yards. The back of the house has a sliding door and 5 windows, so I think they could have eliminated the side yard windows and we would still have ample light.) Blinds can be adjusted to let in the light but camouflage the view, so blinds it is.
REMEMBER THE BEFOE
Just look at how amazing the breakfast area looks with the new blinds. I LOVE them. This room feels so much bigger it really is amazing.
Every home seems to have one room that is a challenge. The family room in this house is that room. It has had a ton of transitions and finally new furniture that fits the scale of the space. Now I think it works and the new blinds will be the finishing touch. To see the before final reveal & how this room finally came together, check out this post.
The only other thing this room needs is a new gallery arrangement above the tv. Other than that I love, love, love this room now.
So what do you think – Better or Not?

Marty, the new blinds make a definite difference. Your rooms are beautiful and classic!
I love your new blinds. In the family room, I think they make your awesome horse picture even more of a focal point! I love that print! It speaks to my heart. I do think the blinds make everything look brighter. So happy you received these as Christmas gift. A thoughtful give to receive.
SOOOO much better! Absolutely perfect!
Love! Love! Love! Makes the room happier.
Your new blinds look amazing! I knew you were changing them and I can’t believe the difference. You must be thrilled. You get so much sun too.
Cindy
Thanks, we do get a ton of sun and I adore the new blinds. It really did make a ton of difference in the room.
The new blinds are fabulous, Marty! I wonder, can you sell the old ones on Facebook Marketplace or Offer Up?
Maybe, or I might be able to give them to a friend. My son might be able to use them too for his house. I really do like the new ones, they are so much nicer and the white is so much better.
Isn’t it amazing Marty how just changing the color of your blinds made a huge impact on these rooms. You get amazing light and the rooms do look so much brighter and bigger. Happy Wednesday.
Hugs,
Kris
Thanks, I really think so too. I love the new blinds.
Marty, you betcha! That’s what we have in our house, mostly, and I love them. I did put the brown wood blinds in the BR bay window, for hubby. It’s been 18 years, may change them out now!
Very nice! Those do open the rooms up.
I love it, Marty, and I think you’ll just keep loving it more as you finish the gallery wall you want.
Marty,
Gorgeous transformation!
Love the lighter, brighter look for your rooms!
Pat
Me gusta mucho como se ve ahora, la claridad que deja entrar, y los colores se reflejan cual son…Muy cálido. Saludos
Sounds like you were on Santa’s good list. Wow…the room looks so much bigger now. Beautiful!
Thanks, I thought it looked bigger too. Those brown blinds were the first thing you saw when you looked at the room. Now it is just a white wall. So much better. Can’t wait to see how your floors are coming along. Marty
oh I agree Marty, the new lighter blinds look amazing!!
Marty, It looks beautiful. I had the brown wood blinds in my other place, and I did not like them. The white looks beautiful. Wow! you have the sunshine. . . by the way, I love, love, that horse.
