Adding Plants & Trees To Your Decor

Plants always add character to any room.  They just make a room come to life.  Adding Plants & Trees To Your Decor can be one of your best decorating tools.

You’ve all heard me go on and on about finding the right console TV stand for my family room.  Well, I still haven’t found it.  I am currently using a library table that I’ve had for years.  It is the right size, just not the right style, but I am determined to make it work until I find what I really want.  I decided to switch a few things around and give this area a different look and a little more character. (This is a small room, so some of the pictures are taken from behind the kitchen island.)

This is not a big room, so when we bought a larger TV, things really needed to change.  The previous console table and chairs on each side just didn’t seem to work anymore.

Here is what we had with the smaller Tv.

The new TV was way too big to sit on this console, so I brought in the library table from the entrance hall.  It was wall to wall furniture that made me feel closed in and really leggy.   You can see what I mean here.   This needs something substantial to ground it.

Now back to the present.  Since I love plants and know how much they add to any room, I knew I wanted to add some plants to this room.  If you can add a tree, that is even better, so I went shopping.  I found a fabulous ficus and some ivy.  I was thinking about a faux olive tree since they are so “in” at the moment.  But real plants are always so much prettier.  I found a twisted trunk Ficus that was only $59 (half of what a mediocre faux olive would cost) and love how pretty it is.

My daughter gave me a cutting she started off a Fiddle Fig Leaf.  It was sitting in a pretty basket, so I looked for another basket to hold the Ficus.  I added some Ivy around the base of the Ficus to fill in and drape over the edge.  I love this combination, so pretty.

Once I find the right console and hang the TV on the wall, I will find a new gallery option that I think will add more substance and character to this wall and the room.

Not so many legs now, this is so much better and much more interesting.

SHOP THE ROOM

I just recently saw this console and this chair.  I kind of like the idea of the wicker fronts on the console and the woven leather chair is fun.  Both would tie in with my more contemporary design this room is taking on.

This is looking so much better.  I am in no rush to find a console now, I can wait and find exactly what I want.  (I am trying to take my own advice and not just settle for anything to say a room is done.)  For now, this looks just fine and I actually kind of like it, so I am saving my pennies and waiting to find just the perfect piece and maybe a new chair too.

I love the plants! Can you share how your daughter was able to start the fiddle leaf fig from a cutting? I am jealous of the ficus tree for $59, too. I had one for years but left it outside in the heat too long and it died. I want to look for another because once you get them settled in a space, they are trouble free.

She said she had one that sprouted a side so she cut it off and put it in some water and it sprouted, so she planted it. I love having it and it has already put out 3 new leaves. Thanks, Marty

Maybe consider a console that is wider and perhaps lower than what you are using now, extending beyond your pictures on the wall. I enjoy your blog Marty!

This is not at all what I will use in here, it is just a table I had to use to fill in until I find a console, I shared several of my ideas in this post. I agree, a console cabinet is what I really need, but I can’t use one any longer, this one is as long as I can fit in this room without getting rid of a chair or the plants. Thanks for your comment.
